If you've tried to reach us recently, you'll know we're in the midst of our busiest season. As is typical for this time of year, we are overflowing with babies and orphans, including raccoons, squirrels, birds, and turtles. Our staff and volunteers are working around the clock to field calls and care for animals who experienced a tough start to life. ❤️‍🩹

Meet our sweet porcupette patient! 🦔

Did you know porcupettes are born with soft and flexible quills that harden as they get older?

This little baby was brought to us as a suspected orphan. Because they don't possess the skills of older porcupines, porcupettes may be left alone while their mother forages or climbs. To avoid any unintentional separation, spend some time watching wildlife to ensure the mother doesn't return and that the baby is vulnerable.

In this baby's case, they will grow up with us and be released when old enough to be on their own!

We shell-a-brated World Turtle Day yesterday by releasing this adult painted turtle that was brought to us after being chewed by a dog.

Fortunately, we were able to treat its wounds and gave time for them to heal in a clean environment. Some scars remain, but this turtle is ready for the summer season in its ancestral wetland. 🐢

Turtles face many additional threats in Ontario, including habitat loss and road mortality. Be mindful of these incredible creatures, especially as they are on the move this time of year. Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms and wild moms out there! 🐢🦊🦝

This sweet raccoon mom was our first raccoon of the season. She was found inside a garbage can where she had babies and was caring for them. A garbage can was no place for babies to grow, so they're with us for a little while until they're ready for release!

Spring is baby season, which means wild mothers are working extra hard to keep their little ones safe, fed, and protected. From raccoons raising babies in unexpected places to birds nesting close to home, these moms are caring, resilient, and doing their best to survive alongside us.

This Mother’s Day, you can help keep wild families together by giving nesting mothers space, avoiding disturbance of den sites, and proactively closing off attics, crawl spaces, sheds, and other areas before animals move in to have their babies.

A little compassion and prevention can make a big difference for wildlife families this season!

Join the team at Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre this summer!

We’re looking for dedicated, hardworking students who are passionate about wildlife and animal care to support our work during the busy summer season.

Ideal candidates are:

• Motivated and reliable
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
• Passionate about animals and conservation
• Preferably pursuing studies in animal health, veterinary sciences, wildlife conservation, biology, or related fields

Requirements:

• Must be 16 years of age or older
• Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
• Ability to assist with animal care, cleaning, feeding, and daily centre operations

A tasty treat in support of Turtle Pond!

If you haven't heard, the new limited edition menu item is available for the month of May as part of our Leslie's Loves campaign to help support local charities and non profits.

This month you can get your hands on the pickled poutine. Our fresh and cut fries, covered in the gravy and curds you already love. Topped off with a tangy dill sauce, chopped pickles and a full deep fried pickle spear.

Proceeds from the sale of each picked poutine will support the Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre in Val Caron.

Assistance needed.
We admitted a fatally injured eastern grey squirrel this evening from the corner of Brenda Drive and St. Charles Road in the south end of Sudbury. She has babies. Once the young ones are hungry enough they will leave their nest in search of mom. Over the next few days people in this neighborhood may find very young squirrels on the ground. They may be as small as the one in the photo, eyes closed with limited mobility. If anyone happens to find young squirrels near the above mentioned area, please reach out. It’s baby season in Northern Ontario! 🐣🌿

Spring is here and babies are arriving at the Centre! Our current patients include baby turtles, raccoons, owls, and squirrels.

This time of year, please remember that if you spot a baby animal, their parents are usually nearby. We try our best to minimize separation between babies and their parents - so here are a few tips to keep in mind:

-Observe from a distance and for a good period of time to ensure they need care
-Keep pets leashed to minimize interaction and potential injury
-Watch for wildlife on roads including turtles
-Secure sheds and attics so wildlife can't access them
