It is National Volunteer Week in Canada (more at https://volunteer.ca/national-volunteer-week/) so wanted to take a minute to send a huge shout out to the Board - Sarah, Alana, and Alex - for all their hard work AND to our amazing team of supporters . . . foster homes, champions, adoptive homes. There are too many of you to name and I'm terrified of missing someone. So let's just say THANK YOU for all you do for the Society and for Canada's National Horse. We could not do our work without your help.

International Volunteer Year is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate the power of civic participation and renew Canada’s culture of volunteering.

Mare in need of a home. The Society is looking for a foster - or adoptive home - for a mare currently in North Bay, ON. She is (to the very best of our understanding) and ex-Amish grade Canadian mare, 15yrs old. No known health issues. Her feet were done earlier this year and she had all her shots late last summer. She's currently a pasture pet for an elderly QH who the owner must say good bye to and doesn't want the mare on her own. She did try to sell but is now working through us. As with most horses that come our way, there is very little available information; her history is a mystery!

IMPORTANT: The Canadian Horse Breeder's Association is embarking on another full breed census. This is critically important information, helping fully track the breed's status. If you have adopted a horse from us, with or without papers, please email [email protected] with your name, CBHA number if you have one, name and registration # of your horses, and info on any unregistered Canadians.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Huge thanks for your help with this monumental undertaking!

Meet Miss X, 15 year old purebred, registered Canadian mare in need of a new home. Standing 15hh with all the things we know and love about the breed - great mind, willingness to learn, good feet. Unfortunately, arthritis is taking its toll making Miss X now only suitable for very light rides, with small adults or teens. This horse is well loved but her owner has made the very difficult decision to re-home her.

She is located just north of Cornwall, ON and is being surrendered to the Society. We do not need to move her urgently so, at this time, hoping to find an adoptive, forever home.

Miss X has not had any foals, but it remains a possibility with close conversations with a veterinary team.

Happy to respond to inquiries. All adoptions must go through our process; see https://canadianhorserescue.ca/fostering-adopting/

UPDATE - we've got 2 possible homes, both look great. Will confirm Nitro has a new home in the next day or so. Huge thanks to everyone who is reaching out.

URGENT - Need a safe space for a gelding currently located in Southern New Brunswick, about an hour from Saint John. Nitro has been in foster care since September 2024 with an amazing family. We picked him up prior to him shipping to the Atlantic Stockyards.

Nitro is 21 years old and NOT rideable; we need a companion-only home. He is UTD vaccines and has a very friendly and gentle personality. Nitro loves kids and always enjoys treats and will come right up to the fence for attention every single time! He gets along well with mares (has lived peacefully with 2) for the past year and is respectful of fencing and gates.

Nitro did have some rough times before coming to us so he still struggles with being tied but that has been improving and will still improve in the right environment. He is looking for a kind, caring home where he can live out his golden years as a companion horse. He would be a perfect pasture buddy and family friend for anyone who loves spending time with horses.

We have lots of photos and videos we can share. He is adored by his foster family but their situation has changed and he needs to be moved - ASAP.

We've had many messages and tags about this post. The photo is an assumption based on the other horses listed in the auction guide. Auction is in Cobden, Ontario on Oct 4th. We cannot confirm breed which makes it challenging for us to intervene but the board is discussing. If you are in the area and can help, let us know.

Our thanks to the many people who have shared this post/photo with us, and for the offers of help. There have been attempts made to connect with the anonymous poster, to no avail.

Unfortunately there is no way to confirm this mare is a Canadian. Someone listing her is as that isn't always accurate. We get countless requests to help for horses that end up being clear paint, pinto, minis, etc. A huge number of people do not understand Canadian horse by birth vs. by breed.

For many of us, this mare does not look Canadian; instead, we lean towards Percheron or some other draft breed. We will likely have somone on site to see if the mare comes with papers and have a tentative foster home - though NO hauling options at this time. However, at this point it will be difficult for us to take her if we can't get more confirmation of her actual breed.

We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that Studly - those horse that inspired the launch of the Rescue was laid to rest today. Our hearts go out to Christine and her family on this immense loss. Christine was a part of our early days, when we were a group of Canadian horse owners/folks passionate about the breed but ignorant to the risks they faced. Thanks in large part to Christine and Studly, the Rescue has existed for 5 years and helped over 70 horses land well.

Rest easy, Studly. You done good.

With lots of activity in recent weeks, we missed an important announcement - the passing of YDL Dark Fox Diablo at the ripe old age of 31!

Diablo, and his buddy Lutin, came to us in late 2020 and was immediately fostered by Shelley. Our beloved Diablo was a bit grumpy in his old age but he loved Shelley. She was his person, so with her he stayed until it was his time. Our deepest thanks to Shelley for all her efforts and incredible care.

Rest easy, Diablo.

UPDATE - huge response, our deepest thanks. We've replied to all messages, providing contact info for SPCA who is making all decisions. We have enough options at this time so can pause for a moment while SPCA sorts through options.

URGENT!! We were confident a home for stallion and two pregnant mares (registered and papers can be recovered) in seized by NB SPCA had been found but that seems to have fallen thru. The stallion MUST be moved ASAP or he is at risk of being euthanized. Homes for the mares are easier but we are desperately hoping someone with Canadian Horse experience, a passion for the breed, etc. If you are in maritimes and can help, or even in QC or ON and can take the stallion ASSUMING we can arrange transportation please reach out ASAP. Pls only reach out if you are truly serious and capable. We do not have time to wade thru folks that are more curious than interested.
