Coalition for Music Education Charitable organization whose mission is to protect and grow music education in our schools and communities.

We envision Canada as a country where the lives of all children are enriched by quality school music programs, and where their active participation in music is valued and supported in our communities. Our mission is to raise the awareness and understanding of the role that music education plays in Canadian culture, and to promote the benefits that music education brings to young people.

Today is , and we’re asking an important question: If youth mental health is in crisis and music can help, why aren’t we ensuring that music is a meaningful part of every student’s education?

If we believe in accessibility and equality, then music education must be part of every school, for every student.

Follow along as we keep speaking up for music education in our schools and communities. 🎶

Our gratitude to Mariposa Folk Festival for their supporting sponsorship of our Ancestors Voices program.

The response to our third year of this program featuring the music of DeeDee Austin has been incredible with 40,000 students participating in schools across the country.

It takes a community to create meaningful opportunities for young people. We’re grateful to the partners who help make music education accessible to more students.

School is back. Is music back too?

As your child settles into a new school year, ask one important question:

What music education will my child receive this year?

Music education isn’t an extra. It helps children build confidence, creativity, collaboration, listening skills, discipline and a sense of belonging.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, create and experience music at school.

Ask. Speak up.
Demand music education.

Because music education is essential education.

Happy World Teachers’ Day!

Today, we celebrate every teacher across Canada — and give a special thank you to the music educators who give so much of themselves to their students.

The extra rehearsals. The evenings and weekends at concerts and performances. The festivals, trips and fundraisers. The countless hours spent creating opportunities for students to make music, share their voices and experience the joy of performing together.

Music teachers know that they are teaching so much more than music.

They are helping students build confidence, find their voice, discover creativity and learn the power of belonging.

They know that music education changes lives.

To every music teacher: we see you, we appreciate you, and we stand with you. Your work matters — in your classroom, in your community and in the lives of the students you teach.
❤️🎵

The future of music starts with you.

Happy World Teachers’ Day!

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Coalition for Music Education honours the children and families impacted by residential schools and recognizes the enduring strength, resilience, and voices of Indigenous Peoples.

We are proud of our Ancestors’ Voices program, created to explore reconciliation through music education while amplifying the voices, stories, and music of Indigenous artists.

May music continue to be a pathway for learning, listening, understanding, and building relationships grounded in respect and reconciliation.

Tomorrow Julian Taylor and our Executive Director Stacey Sinclair will be on The Social to discuss our program, Ancestors Voices: Music and Learning for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Julian was our Ancestors Voices featured artist in 2024, followed by Adrian Sutherland in 2025, and this year, DeeDee Austin

This program brings Indigenous artists and their songs into classrooms with curriculum-linked lesson plans and activities, created by an Indigenous music educator. The program teaches about the history of residential schools and the importance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation using music as a tool for learning.

We are so proud of the impact of this program which has reached more than 230,000 students since its launch in September 2024.

We hope you will tune in tomorrow for this special episode of The Social.

Our thanks to Mariposa Folk Festival for the supporting sponsorship of Ancestors Voices.

This Saturday it’s Music Day in Canada, a celebration of live music happening in cities across the country.

We had to be part of it - our Music Monday festival in May is so closely aligned with their mission - and our shared commitment to championing music.

We will be at the event in Barrie so come celebrate live music with us - visit our table to grab a button or sticker and learn about our work to protect and grow music education. Why? Because music education in our schools and communities is the incubator for the live music industry!
