Women In Leadership Foundation WIL’s story begins with WIL’s Founder & President, Maya Kanigan, a commerce grad following her life’s passion and founded WIL at the age of 28.

Women in Leadership Foundation is committed to advancing diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces by elevating women into leadership and creating opportunities for growth, connection, and impact. For Maya, WIL was created because she believed that featuring female role models and their success stories would inspire others and make a difference in the lives of the next generation. She felt that

by doing so, we would see a ripple effect with more women in leadership roles. To learn more please visit our website: http://womeninleadership.ca

Today is Women in Leadership Day 💙

Held every year on the last Wednesday of May, this day is a reminder of the power of connection, mentorship, and collective action in building more inclusive workplaces and communities.

Women in Leadership Foundation has spent over two decades creating spaces where women across Canada can learn, grow, and lead with confidence. This year, we are also celebrating 25 years of impact. From mentorship programs to national forums, the mission has always been the same: to support and uplift the next generation of women leaders.

Today we celebrate the progress, the community, and everyone who continues to be part of this movement for change 💙

Meet Ava Bates, one of our passionate Emerging Leaders volunteers ✨

Ava believes volunteering is about creating meaningful impact through kindness, teamwork, and connection. She shared, “There is no better feeling than knowing something you did made someone else’s day better.” Through her volunteer journey, Ava has learned how even small acts of support can change lives and open doors to future opportunities.

For Ava, leadership also means leaning on community, building strong relationships, and remembering the purpose behind the work. She encourages others to embrace their passions, make a difference, and never underestimate the impact they can have.

Today, on Red Dress Day, the Women in Leadership Foundation honours Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. We remember those whose lives were taken too soon and stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada.

As an organization committed to inclusive leadership, we recognize the importance of amplifying Indigenous voices and advocating for justice, safety, and systemic change.

Taking Control of Time and Energy

In Part 7 of her WIL blog series, Penny Izlakar reflects on what it truly means to take control of your time and energy as a leader. She shares how early leadership often comes with the pressure to be constantly available, and how that mindset can quickly lead to burnout and reactive decision making.

Through her own experience, she explores the shift from being busy to being purposeful, and how protecting your calendar can help clarify priorities and improve effectiveness. She also introduces practical strategies such as time blocking, creating no meeting zones, and conducting energy audits to better align work with peak performance.

A thoughtful read for anyone looking to lead more intentionally, reduce overwhelm, and create space for strategic thinking.
