Oxfam's Executive Director on what's important this election season https://www.facebook.com/OxfamCanada/posts/10153549667774277

"it would seem that one of the key triggers for the 2011 Syrian uprising was the 2006 to 2010 drought, the most severe on record in this fertile region, itself probably caused or exacerbated by climate change.

As the abstract of an academic paper published this March in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences puts it: “There is evidence that the 2007−2010 drought contributed to the conflict in Syria. It was the worst drought in the instrumental record, causing widespread crop failure and a mass migration of farming families to urban centres."

Global warming does not cause the conflicts that have caused mass movement of people, but it would be wrong to say it does not contribute

Eight Nobel Peace Laureates are calling for urgent action to bring the abducted girls of Nigeria home.

In a statement released today, the Laureates state: "We join our hands in solidarity with our Nigerian sisters and activists who are using every means, including street protests and social media, to spur action nationally and globally so that the girls of Chibok are returned safely to their families."

(Ottawa—May 7, 2014)—The April 14th abduction of over 270 girls from a secondary school in Chibok in the state of Borno, Nigeria is a chilling reminder that society’s most vulnerable citizens—our children—remain targets of violence.

Selling a surplus allows poor farmers to earn an income, but rarely can they exercise any power in markets where middlemen, processors, aggregators, freighting companies and those controlling brands and distribution call the shots.

Could you live on just 30L of water per day? Thirty litre jugs of water, and a constant awareness of their imminent emptiness, faces over 100,000 Syrians every day at the refugee camp Za'atari.

Take the 30L challenge, share your story, and spread the word to raise awareness and help keep the taps flowing for Syrian refugees.

Saturday evening I spent reconfiguring my toilet to a 4L flush and filling small bottles and jugs of water carefully portioned for drinking and cleaning. I was preparing for our Sunday challenge to live on 30 litres of water for a day.
