Our community came together for a commemorative Truth and Reconciliation Day event last Thursday. The gathering began with a Grand Entry, followed by drumming, singing and sacred ceremonies, offering everyone in attendance a chance to pause, listen and honour the significance of the day. The event recognized survivors and remembered those who never made it home from residential schools, while acknowledging that the work of reconciliation continues.
We were honoured to welcome Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, Minister Andrew Carrier, Elder Winston Wuttenee and Elder David Budd to the event. We were also grateful to have Superintendent Ramkissoon and Inspector Riel join us.
A special thank you to Elder Val Vint, and Aleatra and her daughter Juliette, who shared their time and voices at the event. We also appreciate Melvin Starr for guiding the event as the MC, along with everyone else who contributed to the day. The event ended with an Indigenous meal prepared by Shelly’s Bistro.
