In December 2025, the International Center for Family Welfare (ICFW) successfully organized and delivered a Leadership Capacity Building Workshop specifically designed to strengthen the political leadership aspirations of racialized women across Ontario.
This initiative forms a core component of the International Center For Family Welfare (ICFW) project, “More Racialized Women in Politics”, generously funded through Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE).
The workshop brought together racialized women with clear ambitions to participate or advance in political leadership roles, offering them practical skills, strategic insights, and networking opportunities to support their future public service and civic engagement journeys, addressing barriers that have historically limited diverse representation in Canadian politics. The initiative aligns with national efforts by WAGE to remove systemic barriers and expand leadership opportunities for women and gender-diverse people, particularly those from underrepresented and racialized communities.
These strategic areas were covered by the training
• Political communication and messaging,
• Campaign planning and strategy,
• Leadership and community mobilization,
• Fundraising and sponsorship skills.

The workshop solidified ICFW’s commitment to amplifying the voices of racialized women and ensuring they have the confidence and capability to pursue leadership and decision-making roles at all levels of government,” said Catherine Ako, President & CEO of ICFW. “By investing in skills development and political confidence, we aim to contribute to a more representative and equitable political landscape in Canada.”
This workshop was made possible through financial support from Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), a federal government entity committed to advancing gender equality and inclusive leadership in public, economic, and political life across Canada.

Brampton is one of Canada’s most demographically diverse cities, with a high proportion of racialized residents, an attribute that influences participation and representation in local politics.

Between 2018 and 2022, the participation and success rates of women and gender-diverse women in municipal elections increased to around 32%.

While there is still more work to be done, the growing success of racialized women in the municipality is encouraging and points to a brighter future.

12/18/2025

Since 2018, the composition of Ontario’s provincial cabinet has reflected relatively limited representation of women and gender-diverse individuals, with their share ranging approximately between 24% and 40%.

This indicates a persistent gap from full gender parity, underscoring the ongoing challenges that women and gender-diverse people continue to face in attaining equitable representation in provincial and local political leadership.

The data indicate that the representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in political leadership positions remains below the critical threshold of 30%.

However, there has been an improvement from 2018 to 2022, with an increase of over 25%, highlighting progress while underscoring the need for continued efforts.

The situation for racialized women is particularly concerning, with their representation in political leadership in the province remaining critically low at less than 4%

The data indicate that women and gender-diverse individuals comprised 32.3% of elected or acclaimed candidates in 2022, up from 29.4% in 2018.

However, racialized women represented only 5% of female councilors in 2022.

This suggests that more concerted support is needed to level the political playing field for all genders.

12/15/2025

Since 2018, women and gender-diverse individuals have consistently held between 37% and 40% of the seats in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, surpassing the 30% threshold often regarded as a critical mass for meaningful representation.

However, the representation of racialized women remains disproportionately low.

More effort is still needed to ensure that racialized women receive the support necessary to compete on the same level as other women.
