Canada’s cadet movement is much older than many people realize, with Army Cadets dating to 1879, Sea Cadets to 1895 and Air Cadets to 1941.

Today, roughly 52,000 young Canadians between 12 and 18 participate in the program through corps and squadrons spread across the country.

The three branches share training in leadership, citizenship, physical fitness and teamwork before branching into their specialized sea, land and aviation activities.

Girls were formally admitted to the program in 1975 and now make up more than 30% of Canadian cadets.

The alumni list has some remarkable names, including Canadian astronauts Chris Hadfield, Marc Garneau and Jeremy Hansen.

Most units operate close to home during the school year, usually meeting one evening a week with additional weekend and summer opportunities around the country.
