Join Us for "Crossing the Divide" in Ottawa Jan. 28th

Over the past few months, we’ve talked a lot about the importance of civics education for youth. But what about the adults who make up our voting-age population today?

At a time when societies around the world face escalating polarization, including right here in Canada, we invite you to join us for an evening of film, dialogue, and connection that models a different way forward.

This special event brings together the short documentary Crossing the Divide with cross-partisan political leaders and the film's protagonists for a conversation about constructive disagreement, pluralism, and civic participation.

The film is directed by Chrisann Hessing, who directed the Unrigged series which delved into some of the most important issues facing our democracy in Canada, including heightened polarization.

We hope you can join us from 5-7pm on Wednesday January 28, 2026 at the Global Centre for Pluralism (330 Sussex Dr) in Ottawa!

What keeps our work at going when democratic reform feels long, complex, and uphill? People.

People like Clare - a former history and civics teacher, a member of our Board and civics education committee, and a monthly donor who believes deeply in the promise of a better democracy.

Clare supports our civics education work because, as she puts it, “the right to vote is considered the most fundamental democratic right,” and yet too often, election outcomes fail to reflect the voices of most voters. She believes “it’s time we adopted an electoral system that reflects the votes cast — so governments truly represent the views of the electorate.”

Her support helps make possible hands-on civics education where students don’t just learn about voting; they practice it, debate outcomes, and see how different systems shape results.
