What keeps our work at going when democratic reform feels long, complex, and uphill? People.

People like Clare - a former history and civics teacher, a member of our Board and civics education committee, and a monthly donor who believes deeply in the promise of a better democracy.

Clare supports our civics education work because, as she puts it, “the right to vote is considered the most fundamental democratic right,” and yet too often, election outcomes fail to reflect the voices of most voters. She believes “it’s time we adopted an electoral system that reflects the votes cast — so governments truly represent the views of the electorate.”

Her support helps make possible hands-on civics education where students don’t just learn about voting; they practice it, debate outcomes, and see how different systems shape results.

If you share Clare’s belief that civics education is one of the most important contributions we can make to a healthier democracy, join us and help build lasting change.

🎉 HUGE NEWS: We just SMASHED our $5,000 goal and have now secured OVER $7,000 to build a groundbreaking new civics curriculum resource for Ontario Grade 10 students!

Big thanks to every single donor who believed in this vision. You did this! 🙌

This new resource will teach students about ranked ballots, voting reform, participatory democracy, and how they can actually fix the system — not just memorize it. It’s the civics education Canadian kids deserve.

And we’re not stopping there.

We’ve applied for a matching grant from the Max Bell Foundation that could DOUBLE the impact and let us build a national repository of free civics resources for teachers coast to coast to coast.

At Unlock Democracy Canada, we know one simple truth: a stronger democracy starts in the classroom.

With over 150,000 Grade 10 students in Ontario alone, this pilot is just the beginning. We hope this project will be the spark that can ignite real change for an entire generation.

The clock is ticking — and we’re on a mission to get a dynamic civics education resource into Ontario classrooms this school year.

We’ve already passed the halfway mark toward our fundraising goal to create a free, engaging, curriculum-aligned lesson plan for Grade 10 civics educators — but we still need your help to reach the finish line.

Why does this matter?

Because educators are working harder than ever, often without enough resources, to prepare lessons that inspire and inform. Our resource will be designed to support these dedicated teachers and give students a deeper, richer understanding of democracy — understanding why voting matters and how our system could work better for everyone.

Built around the acclaimed Unrigged docuseries, this lesson plan will help students explore alternative and more representative voting systems, understand how democracy can be improved, and empower them to take meaningful civic action at the local level.

Hundreds of educators and over 100,000 Grade 10 students stand to benefit this year. And because the curriculum will be reusable and adaptable, its impact will multiply for years to come — inspiring generation after generation of young Canadians to become informed, active citizens.

But to make this happen in the 2025-2026 school year, we need to act fast.

Please help us spread the word and support the campaign today.

Will you join us in unlocking a better democracy for Canada’s youth?
