Society of United Professionals

Society of United Professionals The Society of United Professionals represents more than 10,000 energy and legal professionals. We are problem solvers, experts, and innovators.

In 1944, four hundred Ontario energy workers united to demand better working conditions. Facing a changing world, they couldn’t know what challenges awaited them, but they knew they would face them together. For over 70 years, we have grown, adapted, and fought, collectively, to uphold our professional standards, and the rights all workers deserve. Through bracing setbacks and hard-fought victorie

s we remain, resolute in our commitment to our work—and each other. We are professionals of many stripes, growing to meet the demands of our rapidly changing world with reason, compassion, and ingenuity. Today, the Society represents more than 9,000 professionals working in the energy and legal sectors.

Hybrid work is no longer an experiment- it is an established and effective way of working.
Organizations across sectors have seen how flexible work arrangements can support productivity, improve recruitment and retention, and help employees maintain healthier work-life balance. These are not temporary benefits or workplace trends. They are part of building modern, sustainable, high-performing workplaces.
As more employers move toward rigid return-to-office policies, it is important to recognize hybrid work as a core working condition where feasible. One that reflects how work is successfully being done today.

Hybrid work is about more than convenience, it helps people care for the people who depend on them.

Flexible work arrangements can make a meaningful difference for caregivers balancing professional responsibilities with family needs. For many workers, hybrid work creates the flexibility needed to support aging parents, children, and loved ones while continuing to contribute fully at work. Protecting hybrid work means protecting people, families, and healthier workplaces.

Remote and hybrid work aren’t holding workplaces back, they helped drive productivity growth during one of the biggest workplace shifts in modern history.

According to research from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rise in remote work was associated with an estimated 1.2 percentage-point increase in productivity growth across industries during the pandemic.

The evidence is clear: flexible work supports performance, accessibility, retention, and a stronger modern workforce. Protecting hybrid work means protecting what works.

Mother’s Day, celebrated this year on May 10, 2026, is a time to honour all who nurture, support, and protect, in all the beautiful ways that love, family, and care take shape.

Do you know how Mother’s Day started in Canada? We followed an initiative that began in the United States, led by Anna Jarvis in 1908 to commemorate her mother, a peace activist. The day was first known as Mother’s Day for Peace. In Canada, it was first observed on May 9, 1914, marked by church services and the wearing of a white carnation, before becoming more commercialized in the 1920s.

Since 1914, our understanding of motherhood has grown and evolved. It is no longer defined by biology, gender norms, or tradition. It lives in every act of care, resilience, and advocacy, from q***r moms and trans parents, to Two-Spirit caregivers, chosen families, grandparents, aunts, mentors, and community builders.

We also recognize that this day can carry many emotions, for those navigating loss, longing, complicated relationships, or paths not taken. There is space for all of those experiences here.

To all who show up with compassion and strength: your care is real, and it matters. Your kindness and resilience are felt every day. You are a light in our lives.

Let’s take this day to lift each other up and celebrate all the incredible people who nurture with heart and soul, whatever that celebration looks like for you.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Yesterday, the Ontario government announced the next step in advancing the proposed Bruce C Nuclear Project, including support for critical pre-development work toward a new full-scale nuclear build at the Bruce site.

The Society of United Professionals is pleased to see continued progress on a project that will help strengthen Ontario’s long-term energy future.

Ontario’s nuclear sector has been built by highly skilled professionals whose expertise and dedication have helped make this province a global leader in clean, reliable energy generation.

As electricity demand continues to grow, projects like Bruce C are essential to supporting Ontario’s long-term energy security, economic growth, and low-carbon future - while creating meaningful careers for the next generation of workers.

Our members are proud to help power Ontario’s future. ⚡
