Understanding the "why" behind the action.

Did you know? Stealing, or larceny, is consistently one of the most common offenses committed by youth.

But at Youth No Crime, we know that an action rarely tells the whole story. When a young person turns to theft, it is often a symptom of a deeper, unmet need. Whether it stems from peer pressure, a lack of positive outlets, or simply trying to survive in the face of poverty and food insecurity, we have to look beyond the crime to understand the youth behind it.

If we want to lower these rates in our community, we have to address the root causes.

By providing mentorship, ensuring basic needs are met (like through our community food drives!), and offering safe, productive spaces, we can guide youth toward better choices. It’s about offering support and opportunity, not just consequences.

We have to break the cycle before it begins.

It is a tough reality to face: 32% of people experiencing homelessness in Toronto first lost their housing before they even turned 16.

That means nearly a third of our city's unhoused population has been fighting for basic survival since childhood. When a teenager is forced to focus entirely on finding a safe place to sleep, everything else—education, mental health, and positive decision-making—is compromised. This early instability drastically increases the risk of long-term poverty and potential involvement in the justice system.

At Youth No Crime, we know that early intervention is everything. We can't wait until a young person is in crisis to step in.

By providing mentorship, safe spaces, and essential life skills, we are actively working to support our youth before the cycle of homelessness takes hold. Investing in them today is the only way to build a safer, more supportive community for tomorrow.

The numbers tell a story we cannot ignore.

Did you know? In Toronto, a staggering 78% of youth in the shelter system identify as members of a racialized group.

This statistic highlights a deep systemic inequality in our city. When young people face intersecting barriers like racial discrimination, poverty, and housing instability, they are pushed further to the margins. This lack of access to safe housing and essential resources leaves these youth incredibly vulnerable, significantly increasing the risk of them being forced into survival situations and the justice system.

At Youth No Crime, we know that true crime prevention starts with equity. We cannot protect our youth without acknowledging and addressing the systemic hurdles they face.

That is why our programs are designed to provide accessible safe spaces, positive role models, and practical skill-building. We are committed to helping level the playing field and ensuring every young person in our community has the support and opportunities they need to thrive, regardless of their background.

Spotlight on a Canadian Legend: The Incredible Journey of Phil Edwards!

At Youth No Crime, we believe that representation matters. Seeing leaders and athletes who have broken barriers and achieved greatness shows our youth that their own potential is truly limitless.

Today, we are proud to highlight the inspiring story of Phil Edwards! Swipe through the photos to learn about his legacy:

🏃🏾‍♂️ The "Man in Bronze": After moving to Canada from Guyana, Phil persevered through tough times to win 5 Olympic bronze medals—a Canadian record that stood unmatched until 2002!
🥇 Making History: He was the first Black man to win a medal at the 1934 British Empire Games and the very first winner of Canada's Athlete of the Year award (now the Northern Star Award) in 1936.
🩺 A Pioneer in Medicine: Just before his final Olympic appearance, he became the first person of African descent to graduate from McGill Medical School, eventually having a distinguished career as a medical consultant for the Canadian government.

Phil’s story is proof that through dedication—whether on the track or in the classroom—you can overcome tough circumstances and leave a lasting, positive legacy in your community.

The landscape of youth crime is changing.

Did you know? As our world becomes more connected, the challenges our youth face are moving online. We aren't just dealing with physical safety anymore—digital technology has given rise to a sharp increase in cyberbullying, online harassment, and cyber fraud.

For young people, the digital world is just as real and impactful as the physical one. Behind a screen, it can be easy for youth to make permanent mistakes or become victims themselves without parents, teachers, or guardians even realizing it.

At Youth No Crime, we believe that education is prevention. Protecting our youth today means teaching digital literacy, promoting responsible and empathetic online behavior, and providing safe, engaging offline spaces where they can disconnect from the screens.

Let's work together to protect our youth both online and offline! 🛡️

11% of the homeless population in Toronto are youth.

That is a heartbreaking reality. When young people are struggling just to survive and find their next meal, it leaves them incredibly vulnerable. But we aren't just looking at the numbers—we are taking action.

At Youth No Crime, we believe that supporting our community starts with meeting basic needs. That’s why we are stepping up and organizing a YNCA Food Drive! 🥫🥪

We are collecting food items and providing fresh meals to help support the homeless community right here in Toronto. A single meal can make a massive difference in someone's day—and when we come together, we can make a massive difference in our city.

Here is how you can help:
Donate: Drop off your food items or meals! (Add your drop-off location/times here)
Volunteer: Join our team to help sort and distribute the meals.

Let’s show up for our youth and our neighbors. 🤝

💡 Understanding the root causes of youth homelessness.

To solve a crisis, we first have to understand what is driving it. We know that youth make up a significant portion of Toronto’s unhoused population—but why are so many young people ending up without a safe place to sleep?

Here are the top 5 reasons youth experience homelessness in Toronto:
1️⃣ Conflict with parent/guardian (22%)
2️⃣ Not enough income for housing (15%)
3️⃣ Experiencing abuse by parent/guardian (8%)
4️⃣ Conflict with others (7%)
5️⃣ Unfit/unsafe living conditions (6%)

Notice the pattern? The vast majority of these causes are rooted in unsafe environments or a lack of basic affordability, not a personal failure on the part of the youth. When home is no longer a safe option—and the cost of living in Toronto continues to climb—young people are left incredibly vulnerable.

At Youth No Crime, we believe in addressing these root causes. By providing mentorship, conflict resolution skills, and a supportive community network, we aim to give youth the tools they need to navigate life's challenges and build stability.
