Justice Behind Bars at York University is dedicated to advocating for the rights and dignity of incarcerated individuals within the Canadian correctional system, with a primary focus on Ontario. Our organization seeks to address the systemic challenges and injustices that those facing incarceration experience daily, including unsafe and overcrowded environments, inadequate mental health services, and inhumane treatment practices such as solitary confinement, etc.
Prisoners in Canada are often marginalized, neglected, and denied basic human rights, with their voices unheard beyond the prison walls. Many experience mental health crises that are exacerbated by the conditions of confinement, and they lack access to the support and rehabilitation needed for reintegration into society. The overcrowding in Canadian prisons, particularly in Ontario, further compounds these issues, creating an unsafe atmosphere for both prisoners and staff.
Our group seeks to advocate for humane treatment, transparency, and accountability within the correctional system. We focus on reforming harmful practices like prolonged solitary confinement, pushing for the expansion of mental health services, and addressing the critical need for prison reforms that respect the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. By raising awareness and pushing for systemic change, we aim to reduce the inequalities faced by prisoners and foster a correctional system grounded in rehabilitation, dignity, and justice.
Our commitment is not just to highlight these issues but to work alongside legal experts, human rights organizations, and the broader community to drive meaningful reform within the Canadian correctional system. Together, we believe that we can build a future where the rights of all individuals, including those incarcerated, are respected and upheld.
