Forgetting recent memories, repeating the same words or actions, reduced ability to think, reason, and make decisions, as well as changes in personality and behavior—these are common symptoms of dementia. According to physicians, dementia is a degenerative brain disease that severely affects a person’s intellect, memory, and personality. The symptoms usually appear after the age of 65. Among the different types of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

According to 2023 statistics, approximately 700,000 people in Canada are living with dementia. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 1.7 million. Considering the importance of the issue, the Canadian Centre for Information and Knowledge is organizing a workshop.

Canadian Centre Urges Action to Prevent Age-Based Discrimination

To raise awareness about ageism, the Canadian Centre for Information and Knowledge (CCIK) organized an informative session on July 29 (Tuesday) at the BIES office in Toronto, specifically for seniors. Around 30 senior community members participated in the important session and actively engaged in the discussions.

The session was facilitated by CCIK President Imam Uddin, and the presentation was delivered by the organization’s Community Worker, Sadmim Sohana.

On behalf of the Canadian Centre, it was stated that ageism is a serious social issue that manifests through negative attitudes, behaviors, or decisions based solely on a person's age. This form of discrimination is most commonly experienced by older adults—for example, being deemed incapable, having their opinions ignored, or being denied opportunities in employment and services. Ageism not only undermines individual dignity but also deprives society of a wealth of knowledge and experience.

During the open discussion, participants shared their personal experiences and thoughts on how to raise greater awareness in society and how seniors can be recognized as valuable assets to the community.

They emphasized the importance of mutual respect, unity, and understanding, and pointed to the need for addressing generational gaps and the uncertainty in communication between older and younger generations. They also highlighted the need for enhancing seniors’ skills, learning technology, and adapting to modernity.

The Canadian Centre for Information and Knowledge expressed its continued commitment to empowering seniors and promoting their dignity within families, society, and the wider community. The event concluded with a warm reception for all participants.
