Man charged in relation to 48 vehicle break-ins in Mississauga

Peel Regional Police have announced an arrest following a months-long investigation into a string of vehicle break-ins in Mississauga.

Police say they began receiving numerous reports in December 2025 of vehicles being broken into in residential neighbourhoods. The incidents were primarily reported in the areas of Kimbermount Avenue, Aquitaine Avenue, and Regents Terrace, leading the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau to launch an investigation.

The probe was supported by the BEAR Unit (Break and Enter, Auto Response) and uniform patrol officers as police worked to identify a suspect.

On Jan. 26, 2026, officers arrested 20-year-old Basil Ass’ad, who is believed to be connected to 48 separate vehicle break-and-enter incidents. Police say Ass’ad has no fixed address.

He is facing multiple charges, including 48 counts of mischief over $5,000, two counts of theft over $5,000, five counts of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, and fraud under $5,000.

Police say Ass’ad was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.

Everything You Should Know About Unlimited Trash Collection in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon

Starting next week, residents may set out an unlimited amount of garbage on their regular garbage collection day.

Extra garbage will only be collected on your scheduled garbage pickup day, not on recycling days. This means you have just one opportunity to take advantage of this, based on your usual garbage collection schedule.

In most cases, you can place as much garbage as needed at the curb without using garbage tags. However, some restrictions apply. Certain items—such as electronics—are not accepted. To confirm whether an item is eligible for curbside collection or must be taken to a Peel Community Recycling Centre (CRC), please use the waste sorter tool.

You can check your specific garbage exemption day by visiting Peel’s online collection calendar at peelregion.ca.

Additional rules during the exemption period include:

**Placement and collection**

* Set out extra garbage only on your garbage collection day. Garbage will not be collected on recycling days.
* Garbage carts and excess items may be collected at different times.
* Leave your garbage cart and extra garbage at the curb until 8 p.m. If they have not been collected by then, report the missed pickup.

**Placing extra garbage at the curb**

* Place smaller items in garbage bags.
* Set larger items directly on the curb.
* Place excess garbage beside your garbage cart, leaving at least 1 metre (3 feet) of space between them.

**Garbage bag size and weight limits**
Garbage bags placed at the curb must not:

* Weigh more than 20 kg (44 lb).
* Exceed 66 cm (26 in) in width or 90 cm (35 in) in height.
* Be smaller than 30 cm (12 in) in width or height.

More than 1,700 parking tickets were issued during a snow event in Mississauga

During this week’s snowstorm in Mississauga, hundreds of parking tickets were issued as city crews struggled to clear streets.

The storm dumped approximately 45 centimetres of snow on Sunday, making it difficult for plows to navigate around parked cars.

During the declared winter event, some streets required vehicles to be moved, but not all drivers complied. From the start of the storm on Sunday until noon on Tuesday, when the winter event ended, the City of Mississauga issued more than 1,700 tickets, city staff reported at the Jan. 28 council meeting. Two vehicles were also towed during this period.

Tickets were issued both for street parking violations and for vehicles obstructing sidewalk plowing.

This was the first year the city implemented a winter parking restriction across all neighborhoods during snow events. Staff said the approach was measured, focusing on a mix of tickets, warnings, education, and public awareness. Towings occur only when a vehicle poses an immediate safety risk or creates a significant obstruction.

Council discussed a potential “zero tolerance” policy, which would involve towing all vehicles, but noted challenges in deploying tow trucks during major storms.

Confusion arose around 15-hour parking streets and whether they are exempt from winter restrictions. Councillor Chris Fonseca noted frustration among residents whose streets were not fully plowed because of parked cars.

Staff clarified that 15-hour parking is allowed during a declared snow event, whereas five-hour parking is not. Vehicles exceeding the time limit are still subject to tickets.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish questioned the logic of allowing 15-hour parking, expressing concern that streets might never be fully cleared. Councillor Sue McFadden echoed residents’ frustrations, noting complaints about parked cars blocking plowing.

City staff said the policy will be reviewed, and a report on potential changes will be presented at the end of the winter season.

Snow plays havoc with recycling collection in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon

If your recyclables were scheduled for pickup today (Jan. 26) in Peel Region, they won’t be collected.
Circular Materials, the company now in charge of blue bin collection, has cancelled today’s service due to weather and road conditions, according to a notice posted on its website.

As a result, all recycling pickups in Peel Region will be delayed by one day this week:

* Monday collections → Tuesday
* Tuesday → Wednesday
* Wednesday → Thursday
* Thursday → Friday

Peel Region’s recycling program has been operated by Circular Materials—a national not-for-profit organization and administrator of Ontario’s common collection system—since the start of the year.

Stressed students can access support through a group program in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon

High school students in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon who are feeling overwhelmed by academic and personal pressures can access support through a therapeutic group program focused on stress management.

The Youth Have Stress Too program is available to Peel District School Board students in Grades 9 to 12 who are experiencing stress and anxiety. Delivered virtually over five weeks, the program is led by PDSB social workers and helps students identify stress and anxiety triggers while developing healthy coping and stress-reduction strategies.

Each group will include 10 to 12 students and operates through a self-referral model, meaning students must register themselves. While parents, caregivers or school staff may share information about the program, registration should only be completed by students, with support if the student agrees.

Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a group reaches capacity, students will be notified about future program opportunities.

More information or registration details are available at www.peelschools.org.

Students experiencing a mental health crisis are encouraged to call 911 or Peel Crisis Service at 905-278-9036. Additional support is available through Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or by texting CONNECT to 686868.

A new camera has been installed to track which wildlife species are visiting this area of Mississauga

Conservation officials working on a major restoration along Lake Ontario in Mississauga expect large crowds once the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area opens to the public this spring.

In the meantime, Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is turning its attention to the wildlife visiting the nearly completed site during the winter months. On Wednesday, the conservation authority announced it has installed a trail camera along one of the paths to monitor animals moving through the area over the coming months.

During warmer seasons, the camera has already captured images of white-tailed deer, kingfishers, trumpeter swans, snapping turtles and other species beginning to settle into the new habitat. Now set for winter, officials say they are eager to see which animals continue to explore the landscape.

The $59-million, 64-acre Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area is scheduled to open in May 2026. The project is being led by Credit Valley Conservation in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Region of Peel, with contributions from the cities of Mississauga and Toronto.

Recent progress at the site includes the installation of two pedestrian bridges last September. Officials say the crossings will link trails, boardwalks and lookout points across the 26-hectare waterfront property, helping transform the former industrial land into a thriving natural space for both people and wildlife.

Originally slated to open last July, the conservation area experienced close to a year of delays. Once complete, it is expected to become a major environmental attraction in the southern part of Mississauga.

One of the standout features will be a raised boardwalk trail, particularly appealing to birdwatchers. Project leaders say it will offer a unique elevated view over the surrounding vegetation and into the heart of the wetland habitat. Located beside Serson Wetland East, the boardwalk will allow visitors to observe a wide range of bird species at relatively close distances.

The conservation area is being built on a previously degraded shoreline and is named after the late Mississauga city councillor who championed the project. Construction materials such as rubble and fill are being reused sustainably to create green space and reconnect the community with Lake Ontario.

Both the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area and the nearby Lakeview Village mixed-use development are located on the former site of the Lakeview Generating Station, which closed in 2005. The plant’s iconic smokestacks — known as “The Four Sisters” — were demolished in a controlled implosion shortly afterward.

Mississauga man charged after Ferrari stolen from dealership, police say

A Mississauga man has been charged following the theft of several luxury vehicles, including a Ferrari and two Porsches.

The break-in occurred on Jan. 11 around 3:30 a.m., when Halton Regional Police say multiple masked suspects entered Lockwood Leasing on South Service Road West in Oakville.

Once inside, the suspects took the keys to eight high-end vehicles—comprising a Ferrari, two Porsches, two BMWs, and three Mercedes—before driving away with them.

Investigators later discovered a BMW, a Mercedes, a Porsche, and the Ferrari abandoned across the Greater Toronto Area.

On Jan. 12, Peel Regional Police recovered a Porsche 911 and arrested two individuals linked to the Lockwood Leasing thefts.

Halton police confirmed that Amin Hadj Kaddour, 24, of Mississauga, and Joshua Twa’colagiacomo, 24, of Victoria Harbour, have been charged with break-and-enter and disguise with intent.

Both suspects also face additional charges from Peel Regional Police. They were initially held in custody but have since been released on bail.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Halton police at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

Crime Stoppers guarantees anonymity, no requirement to testify, and offers a potential $2,000 reward for tips.

Frozen ponds and rivers present danger in Mississauga

Mississauga residents hoping to enjoy skating or a winter stroll are being urged to avoid frozen ponds, creeks, rivers and Lake Ontario, as ice conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous at this time of year.

“While these areas may appear inviting for skating or walking, they are not safe,” city officials warned in an online notice issued Monday. “Thin ice and fluctuating water levels increase the risk of breaking through.”

Instead, the city encourages residents to take advantage of its free outdoor skating options. All city-run rinks are refrigerated and supervised by staff who regularly monitor and maintain ice conditions.

Available locations include:

* **Celebration Square rink** — Mississauga’s largest outdoor rink, located in front of city hall, offering skate rentals and blade sharpening on site.
* **Port Credit Memorial Park skating trail** — A 200-metre loop with views of the frozen Credit River, located at 40 Stavebank Rd. The trail opened to the public two years ago on Jan. 19, 2024.
* **Woodhurst Heights outdoor rink** — Located at 3475 Ash Row Crescent, this rink offers drop-in skating and hockey programs throughout the day.

The city also noted that more than two dozen natural ice rinks are available in parks across Mississauga. These rinks typically open in late December or January, depending on weather conditions, and are operated and maintained by volunteers.

A similar warning was issued last week by Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), advising residents in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon to stay away from Lake Ontario, the Credit River and other waterways due to unstable ice and snow conditions.

That advisory remains in effect.

“Ice on rivers, ponds and lakes may appear solid, but it can be unsafe at this time of year,” CVC officials said. “Residents are urged to stay off the ice and keep children and pets away from shorelines.”

CVC attributed the heightened risk to fluctuating winter temperatures, which frequently move above and below freezing.

“Repeated freeze-thaw cycles and winter storms are expected to bring mixed and wet precipitation throughout the season,” the conservation authority said. “Warmer temperatures, rainfall and snowmelt can increase runoff, leading to higher water levels and faster flows. When waterways are frozen, these conditions can weaken and shift ice, increasing the risk of breakup and dangerous situations.”
