My Oral Village

My Oral Village Lighting the path out of poverty by creating financial products and enterprise management tools that illiterate and innumerate people can use.

03/25/2026

In this first in our series , our founder Brett Matthews explores the meaning of poverty, obedience, mobility and religion for women, with the amazing Roheena Ali Shah, a development practitioner, broadcaster and gender expert from Gilgit-Baltistan in Himalayan Pakistan.

Avoiding the conventional fog of political and fund-raising goals that so often obscure this vital topic, Orali Talk will explore some of the big human questions that have been obscured by the rush to build national economies.

Roheena envisions a world where everyone is free to make their own decisions, and control their own lives. She has led or worked on gender-transformative and poverty-responsive initiatives across agriculture, financial inclusion, infrastructure, health, safeguarding, and community governance. She has worked with the Economic Transformation Initiative, Gilgit-Baltistan (ETI-GB), Aga Khan Rural Support Programmme (AKRSP), Pakistan, and the Mojaz Foundation Official, among others. As Gender Advisor to My Oral Village | Lighting the path out of poverty, Roheena helped us to craft a pilot hashtag solution for AKRSP in 2022-23 in the mountain villages near Skardu, capital of Pakistan-administered Baltistan.
