Finding Percy Percy Onabigon: A Multi-Part Story

In lieu of National Indigenous People's Day, it is crucial that we reflect on Canada's role in the Residential School system, as well as how past wrongs may properly be brought to justice.

As a child, Percy Onabigon was taken from his family in the Long Lake #58 First Nations community, and sent off to St. Joseph's Indian Residential School in Thunder Bay. But his stay was not long; Percy spent the remainder of his adult life in and out of hospitals and psychiatric wards, on account of his epilepsy. He never saw his family again.

For years, the Onabigon family has worked to find Percy's wherebaouts to no avail. But now, 59 years later, they have finally found closure.

On Tuesday, Percy's story will be continued. His memory could not have been honoured without the tireless work of Anishnabek Nation, with whom the Circle for Democratic Solidarity is proud to partner.

This picture was taken during the recent Rise Above conference (from March 4-6 2025) in Thunder Bay, ON, for St. Joseph's Indian Residential School Survivors, where Ben Rowswell gave a presentation on the work of The Remembering Project. It was an honour to attend the conference and be in the presence of residential school survivors; we look forward with hope and anticipation for what is yet to come.
