The CIC was pleased to sponsor the Prairie Conference: Ukrainian Studies in Times of Global Transformations of the Humanities at the University of Manitoba, April 30-May 4. The conference was organized in collaboration with Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden. Specifically we sponsored the CIC the Round Table on Security and Defence Studies in Times of Russia’s Full Scale Invasion of Ukraine.

Congratulations to the organizers for an excellent conference that featured very impressive academic representation from universities from across Canada and farther afield (from the U.S., Australia, countries across Europe, and more).

In its Speech from the Throne, the Manitoba Government announced it will apply for observer status at La Francophonie. This week Manitoba hosted Ambassadors from more than a dozen francophone countries to make its case that Manitoba should be a part of this important organization.

On Friday, April 24, the Winnipeg Branch of the CIC brought together the Ambassadors, provincial government representatives, and leaders in Manitoba's francophone community to discuss the integration of Manitoba into the International Organisation of the Francophonie and in French-Speaking countries around the world.

The conference "Manitoban Francophonie: Building Bridges and Radiating Internationally" featured an all-star panel including Mariette Mulaire, executive director of the board of directors of the World Trade Centres Association, Patricia Bitu Tshikudi , executive director of the CCFM, Ibrahima Diallo, retired professor from USB and honorary consul of Senegal in Manitoba, the Honourable Glen Simard, Manitoba Minister of Francophone Affairs and Madeleine Arbez, executive director of the CDEM. They offered their views on how Manitoba could deploy more strategically its strengths in business, culture, and education, including bilingualism, to develop and diversify its relations globally.

CIC Winnipeg Branch sponsored the U of M Peace and Conflict Studies Student Association (PACS) conference April 17-18. Participants explored the theme of "Small Peace, Petite Love: Everyday Acts in Peaceable Communities,"

This event marked a major institutional milestone: The 20th Anniversary of the PACS Doctoral program - recognized as the first of its kind in Canada. This special anniversary gathering re-emphasized Winnipeg as a research hub for PACS, drawing distinguished alumni back to celebrate their impact and fostering networking and mentoring opportunities between them and current students. Shifting the scholarly lens beyond state-level negotiations and international treaties, the conference looked at the everyday peace practices that promote peacebuilding in communities, both within Canada and around the world.

The event featured presentations, workshops, performances, and conversations designed to foster dialogue connection, and strengthen the emerging field within PACS, everyday peacebuilding.
