Heritage Worth Preserving
We are a community group which came together to advocate for the preservation of a historical property in Caledon East, Ontario. The history of the property in the vicinity of Allison’s Grove begins as land that was a natural wilderness used as a hunting, fishing and trapping ground by First Nations people. When the land was purchased from the Missisauga First Nation in 1818 a farming community emerged which is still an important part of the Caledon identity today. A third important aspect of the history was the fact that Dr. Samuel Allison built a large stately home from which he, and then his son Thomas W. Allison, operated a medical practice for a combined total of 74 years. This house has been designated a heritage house by the authority of the Ontario Heritage Act.
Allison’s Grove is a property that must be cherished for the story it tells us from time immemorial to the present day. It is a potential centrepiece in our community that will call on us to partake of the beauty and sustaining qualities of nature, to acknowledge and promote our roots in agriculture and to help us to do all that we can to improve the well-being of our citizens.
