This tree lives on the north-eastern corner of Yan Yean Road and Bridge Inn Road Doreen. It is a Red Gum with an estimated age of at least 500 years. In the not too distant future this intersection will be developed to cater for the overwhelming increase in traffic through the area due to extensive housing development. The fight is on to save this tree and its mate (photos to come) which lives adjacent in Bridge Inn Road. Thank you to Sherrie Yeomans (and her parents who own the property) for inviting me to photograph these trees - and the fantastic horses!!

🌳💚 This is why trees are important.
The recent flood in Pakistan took the land, the crops, the homes—yet one tree stood and held the earth together.
Roots gripping soil. Shade holding hope. Life refusing to let go.

Trees don’t just decorate our world—they protect it: they bind the soil, slow the water, shelter life, and give us strength when storms arrive.

European Larch (Larix decidua)

Self-propagation: The tree produces cones with seeds that are dispersed by wind and gravity. Once the seeds fall on suitable soil, they can germinate and grow without human help.

1. Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)

Native to Europe and Asia.

Grows well in cold climates.

Cones open and release seeds, which are dispersed by wind.

2. Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

Common in North American mountain ranges.

Self-seeds in open spaces.

Tolerant to frost and snow.

3. Birch Trees (e.g., Betula pendula – Silver Birch)

Found in northern Europe and mountain forests.

Seeds are very light and wind-dispersed.

Fast-growing and colonizes open spaces.

4. Aspen Trees (Populus tremula or Populus tremuloides)

Spread not only by seed but also by root suckers, forming natural groves.

Extremely cold-hardy.

Common in mountainous terrain in Europe, North America, and Asia.

This imploding bubble stuns or kills prey instantly with shockwaves. The collapse of the cavitation bubble emits a flash of light — a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence. The claw “snaps” faster than a bullet, making the pistol shrimp one of the loudest animals on Earth relative to its size. Scientists study it for applications in underwater technology and medical ultrasonic imaging. It’s a reminder that raw power doesn’t always come in large packages. In fact, this shrimp’s tiny claw might be one of nature’s most precise and potent weapons.

In the scorching desert, the Peelu tree (Salvadora persica), also known as the miswak tree, offers shade that’s 5°C cooler—an essential natural relief. 🌿

It thrives in arid, saline soils, prevents erosion, and supports biodiversity. Its branches are used as natural toothbrushes, and its leaves feed livestock. The sweet fruits are edible, and the tree has medicinal value too. A true desert hero!

This extraordinary plant has the unique ability to hyperaccumulate metals, especially nickel, from the soil. It absorbs and stores large amounts of nickel in its leaves without being harmed. This incredible trait makes Rinorea niccolifera an excellent candidate for phytoremediation—the process of using plants to clean up polluted environments.
