KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives

KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives KAIROS is a Canadian faith-based human rights & ecological justice movement. Social justice film fests, workshops, vigils, marches.... you name it.

What do we do?

* Ecological justice (climate change, energy, resource extraction issues, corporate accountability, connections to global finance)

* Human Rights (Indigenous rights, rights of migrant workers, accompaniment and advocacy with human rights defenders in Sudan, Colombia, Philippines and more).

* Grassroots action for global justice grounded in the local community, base

d in our sixty-plus local groups, community alliances, and local churches. We connect with Indigenous and migrant communities in Canada and with partners throughout the "Third World" (we prefer the term global South!). We ask those of faith and conscience to participate in our justice campaigns or to become a KAIROS Companion

61,000 people in Canada have already taken action. Will you join them?

Caritas Internationalis leaders are thanking more than 200,000 people worldwide, including 61,000 in Canada, who signed the Jubilee Year 2025 call from Pope Francis and Pope Leo to end the global debt crisis.

Unjust Global debt keeps children out of school, families from healthcare, and communities from recovering after climate disasters. The Turn Debt into Hope campaign calls for debt cancellation and a financial system that puts people and planet first.

KAIROS condemns recent U.S. military attacks on Venezuela and calls for dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law and sovereignty.

Grounded in the KAIROS Indigenous Rights Circle, we affirm a Nation-to-Nation ethic: mutual respect, relational accountability and shared responsibility. Dialogue - not domination and violence.

The United Church of Canada joins partners in Latin America and the Caribbean and the World Council of Churches in strongly condemning the US military attack on Venezuela. We echo partners voices such as the Ecumenical Department for Research who reject these actions as the reproduction of colonial historic logic in which Latin America is rendered a “territory of dispute” for plundering, control, and discipline. We call on Canada to clearly and unequivocally condemn this violation of international law through armed aggression.

In November 2025, a civil society letter to Canadian officials warned against the US’ unlawful strikes against maritime vessels and urged Canada to halt the sharing of intelligence with the US through Operation CARIBBE and the export of military goods used in US bombing of civilian vessels off the coast of Venezuela that violated international law. No response to these letters has been received to date.

We call on Canada to work with Latin America and the Caribbean countries to uphold Venezuela´s sovereignty. As a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, we recall “the binding principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which states that nations must refrain from threats or the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. Respect for these principles is essential for peace with justice.”

The Sunday after Christmas often finds us wanting to stay in the gentle glow of the manger. But the scriptures pull us toward a harder truth: the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt.

In our latest reflection, "Jubilee in a Wounded World," Rev. Marianne Emig Carr reminds us that the truth of Christmas isn’t that God came when the world was beautiful—it’s that God entered a world already broken to redeem it from within. 🕊️

Jubilee is God’s vision for renewal where debts are forgiven, land is restored, and the vulnerable are protected. Whether we are hopeful or heartbroken, God is with us in the struggle for justice.

While the world watches the devastation in Gaza, another crime against humanity is unfolding out of sight.

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinians are facing dispossession, mass displacement and escalating violence by Israeli settlers and the Israeli military — what many are calling a “silent genocide.”

The International Court of Justice has ruled these settlements illegal. Canada has recognized the State of Palestine. Canada must act.

✉️ Write to your Member of Parliament today and call on Canada to condemn Israel’s illegal settlements, expand sanctions and uphold international law.

Today is International Migrants Day.

Across Canada, migrant workers sustain our food systems, care sectors and communities, yet many remain trapped in temporary, employer-tied programs that leave them vulnerable to exploitation, including deportation, and separated from their families.

We call on Canada to move beyond temporary, employer-tied programs and toward policies that guarantee permanent status, strong labour protections and the right to belong.

Send a letter to senators calling on them to Vote NO on Bill C-12

KAIROS joins churches and partners around the world including the World Council of Churches in denouncing the violent antisemitic attack in Bondi Beach Australia on Saturday and grieving the loss of lives. We extend our solidarity and prayers to the people of Australia, and the Jewish community there and around the world.
www.oikoumene.org/news/wcc-denounces-terrorist-attack-in-sydney-australia
The WCC statement concludes: "We pray for healing of the wounded, for the consolation of the bereaved... and for all people of good will to work together to confront the normalization of such hatred in politics and society.
We call on all people to work together to make the world a safe and secure place for all people filled with love, harmony and peace." - Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay.

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay denounced a terrorist attack that took place in Sydney, Australia, during the ceremony for lighting the first candle of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach – an iconic location for families and community gatherings.

On this International Human Rights Day — and the final day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence — Rachel Warden, KAIROS’ Partnerships Manager, reflects on where hope can still be found in a world of worsening injustice.

She reminds us that courage lives in everyday acts of activism: in women peacebuilders, migrant workers, Indigenous land defenders and human rights advocates who refuse to look away.
