At AST, we are committed to providing welcoming and affirming access to dementia support, standing united with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

As we celebrate Pride Month, here are a few steps you can take to help create a safe space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community when providing care to a person living with dementia:
🌈 Using gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them.
🌈 Avoiding making assumptions about their partners.
🌈 Respecting gender identity and understanding that transitioning is different for everyone. There is no right or wrong way to express themselves.
🌈 Demonstrating a comfort level with sexual and gender diversity by welcoming and normalizing disclosure of sexuality, gender identity, and expression.

June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This month is a time to reflect on the continued impacts of colonization and consider how we can all contribute to reconciliation. It also provides an opportunity to learn about the cultures, traditions, and experiences of Indigenous Peoples across the country.

Colonization continues to be a root factor of dementia risk in Indigenous populations. From 2020 to 2050, a 273% increase in the number of people of Indigenous ancestry living with dementia is expected. This is much greater than the estimated increase of 187% in people living with dementia in the overall population.

What an incredible day filled with community and connection. We are so grateful for every walker, donor, volunteer, and sponsor who supported this year's . The glorious weather certainly helped to energize the crowd of over 1,000 walkers as they made their way around Downsview Park.
