-- Stories from Black Canadian history that helped shape the country we live in today.

Chloe Cooley was an enslaved Black woman in Upper Canada whose forced violent arrest in 1793 sparked outrage and directly influenced early anti-slavery legislation in Canada. While much of her life is not recorded in detail, her resistance became part of a turning point in Canadian law and history.

Her story reminds us that acts of courage — even when the world is not listening — can still change the course of history.

June is PRIDE Month -- a time to celebrate the diversity, strength, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities while continuing to foster spaces where everyone feels safe, valued, respected, and included.

At the heart of early learning is belonging — creating environments where children and families can be themselves, feel welcomed, and know they are cared for just as they are.

This month, we celebrate kindness, inclusion, acceptance, and the many ways that people and families are beautifully unique.

It's National AccessAbility Week — a time to celebrate the leadership, contributions, and voices of persons with disabilities across Canada.

This year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada,” reminds us that accessibility is a shared responsibility. It’s about removing barriers, uplifting inclusive practices, and creating communities where everyone can participate fully and with dignity.

National AccessAbility Week, which runs from May 31 to June 6, 2026, is a time to celebrate the progress we’ve made to build a more accessible and disability inclusive Canada while continuing to break down barriers.

It is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time when we recognize and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

The month is also an opportunity to listen, learn, reflect, and deepen our understanding of Indigenous perspectives, stories, and experiences — past and present.

National Indigenous History Month encourages all of us to continue learning through stories, art, music, language, and community voices while reflecting on the importance of respect, relationships, and reconciliation.

When children see themselves reflected in the stories they read, they receive a powerful message: You belong. Your story matters.

Books help kids build identity, confidence, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world. When they meet characters who look like them, share their experiences, or celebrate their culture, it creates moments of pride and connection.

Big feelings are a big part of growing up — and at Don Valley Parkway Forest EarlyON, children had the chance to explore them in playful, supportive ways.

During our Preschool Fun with Learning program, children shared how they were feeling, added their names to a feelings chart, and connected emotions to physical sensations. These simple activities help children understand themselves and communicate with others.

A wonderful reminder that engagement often begins with shared experiences.

The children in our Parkland School Age program were initially unsure about this STEM activity — but once the Educator began building alongside them, curiosity quickly grew. Before long, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving took over as the children worked together and explored with enthusiasm.

This week’s share comes from Today’s Parent’s anti‑racism series — a collection of articles offering concrete steps families can take to raise anti‑racist kids. This piece breaks down why early conversations matter, and how we can support Black children by naming truths, celebrating brilliance, and challenging bias in everyday moments.

This may be uncomfortable to hear, but racism is ingrained in all of us. It’s no longer enough to teach kids not to “see colour”—in fact, it’s harmful. Here’s how to take action.
