A closer look at The Island Paintings by Joseph Drapell.

For Drapell, Georgian Bay became much more than a landscape. The water, windswept pines and untouched surroundings helped inspire a new visual language within his abstract practice — an influence that can be traced throughout decades of his work.

Coming soon to The Modern Toronto: Joseph Drapell — The Island Paintings.

Opening October 3, this exhibition brings together works by Toronto-based abstract painter Joseph Drapell, whose connection to Georgian Bay has influenced his artistic practice for decades. Drapell first visited Georgian Bay at age 30, later adopting an island there as what he describes as his spiritual home and a lasting source of inspiration.

A look back at opening weekend at The Modern.

Thank you to everyone who joined us as we reopened our doors and welcomed a new season at the gallery. It was wonderful to see the space filled again—with art, conversation, and so many familiar and new faces.

Steve Rockwell’s Tenet works are created in mixed media on dArt International paper, continuing the artist’s longstanding connection between art-making and publishing.

Pictured are select works from the series, each measuring 17 × 14 inches and created in 2026.

See the works in person beginning September 12, with an opening reception from 2–5 PM.
