Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Gerry Meehan, a man whose impact on hockey extended far beyond the scoresheet.

On the ice, Gerry enjoyed a distinguished professional career in the National Hockey League, playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Flames, and Washington Capitals. He earned the respect of teammates and opponents alike through his skill, competitiveness, and professionalism.

What made Gerry truly remarkable was his success beyond his playing career. While still involved in professional hockey, he pursued higher education and earned a law degree, demonstrating the intelligence, discipline, and determination that defined every aspect of his life. His legal education provided a strong foundation for the leadership roles he would later assume within the game.

Following his playing days, Gerry became General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres and later served in senior executive positions with the NHL. His thoughtful leadership, business acumen, and understanding of both the game and its people made him one of hockey’s most respected executives.

Yet Gerry’s greatest legacy may be found in the way he cared for others. He never forgot the teammates, friends, and colleagues who shared his journey. Long after the final buzzer, he remained a trusted advisor, mentor, and friend to countless former players. Whenever someone needed guidance, support, or simply a helping hand, Gerry was there. He understood that the transition from hockey could be challenging, and he quietly devoted himself to helping others find their way.

His compassion, generosity, and loyalty earned him admiration throughout the hockey world. Gerry believed that success meant lifting others, and he spent a lifetime doing exactly that.

Gerry Meehan’s legacy is one of excellence, leadership, education, and service. He excelled as an NHL player, earned a law degree, succeeded as a hockey executive, and, most importantly, became a man known for his character and kindness. His accomplishments are impressive, but it is the lives he touched and the people he helped that will be remembered most.

Our thoughts are with his beloved wife, Mirella, his children, and his grandchildren, who were at the very centre of his life and whom he adored beyond measure. Nothing brought Gerry greater pride or joy than his family. They were his foundation, his greatest accomplishment, and the source of his deepest happiness.

May we honour Gerry’s memory by celebrating not only his achievements on the ice and in the boardroom, but also his dedication to education, his commitment to helping others, his devotion to family, and the compassion that defined his life.

Rest in peace, Gerry. Your influence on hockey, your kindness to others, and the love you shared with your family will endure for generations and forever be remembered by our NHL Alumni Hockey Family.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Cliff Fletcher, a true giant of the hockey world.

Throughout his remarkable career, Cliff served the game in many capacities, including as a general manager, executive, and visionary leader. He was an innovator whose influence helped shape modern hockey and whose contributions left a lasting mark on the sport he loved so deeply.

Respected throughout the hockey community, Cliff was admired not only for his passion for the game but also for the compassion he showed toward the players, coaches, and colleagues who had the privilege of working with him. He understood that hockey was about more than wins and losses. It was about people. His commitment to developing players and helping them succeed both on and off the ice earned him the admiration and gratitude of countless individuals throughout the game.

His many years in hockey stand as a testament to the heart, dedication, and soul he invested in improving the sport. As a leader, mentor, and pioneer, he played an integral role in the growth and evolution of hockey across generations.

Beyond the rink, Cliff was a devoted family man who cherished every aspect of being a husband and father. His love for his family was evident in all that he did, and those closest to him were always at the centre of his life.

The hockey world has suffered a tremendous loss. Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with his beloved wife, Linda, and his children, Chuck and Kristy, during this difficult time.

Dennis played 904 regular-season games over the course of 13 seasons with Chicago from 1964 to 1977, before playing his 14th and final NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings.

Internationally, Dennis represented Canada at the 1972 Summit Series, registering 2 goals and 4 points in 4 games.

After retiring from professional hockey, Dennis returned to St. Catharine’s, enrolled at Brock University, earned a degree in education, and later became a teacher and an athletic director.
