In this clip from our “Moving Beyond Animal Testing” panel event, Dr. Lorna Ewart — Chief Scientific Officer at Emulate Bio, another leading developer of organ-on-chip technology — highlights a striking example of what happens when animal data doesn't translate to humans: a drug that cleared safety testing in rats accumulated in the human liver with fatal consequences, due to fundamental differences in how our species process compounds.

This is why the shift toward human relevant, non-animal methods in research, teaching, and testing isn't just an animal protection issue — it's a human safety issue.

It's time to fund the future. We must accelerate investment in innovative non-animal methods and commit to replacing animal models wherever today's science makes it possible.

This month, supporters across Canada joined us and Lush Cosmetics in support of our “Paws Off Our Pets” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the continued use of dogs and cats in research across Canada and the loopholes that still leave them vulnerable in Ontario.

From postcard signing stations in stores, to conversations online, to the Union Station activation featuring hundreds of pet collars representing dogs and cats used in Ontario research, this campaign has sparked important conversations across the nation.

But the work is not over yet.

While Ontario’s Bill 75 introduced some new protections, critical gaps remain:
→ The pound-to-research pipeline is still not fully closed
→ Dogs and cats bred inside facilities or outside Ontario can still be brought into labs
→ Exceptions and discretionary approvals remain possible
→ “Invasive medical research” is still undefined

We will continue pushing for stronger protections and meaningful regulatory change for all animals used in research.

We are so grateful to Lush Cosmetics for collaborating on this campaign, everyone who purchased a paw soap, signed a postcard, shared our content, or helped amplify this message. 🐾

There is still a limited quantity of paw soaps available online and in-store across Canada while supplies last. You can support our work by purchasing a paw soap online here: https://www.lush.com/ca/en_ca/p/paw-soap

Student voices are getting louder at York University as questions grow about the unknown status and welfare of monkeys used in research on campus. Following a recent protest, many are calling for transparency, accountability, and an end to primate research altogether.

We have still not received a reply to our calls, emails, and letters to York University.

We urge the public to continue calling the university or to take action online on our website: https://www.animalalliance.ca/campaigns/end-primate-research-in-ontario/

Did you get your paw soap yet? 🐾

Today is the last day to purchase a special paw-shaped soap at participating Lush stores or online in support of our No Pets in Research campaign.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about the continued use of dogs and cats in research across Canada and the loopholes that still leave them vulnerable in Ontario.

While Ontario’s Bill 75 introduced some new protections, critical gaps remain. The law still contains loopholes, including it:

→ Does not define what constitutes “invasive medical research”
→ Does not shut down the pound‑to‑research pipeline
→ Allows exception through discretionary approvals
→ Continues to permit dogs and cats bred within a research facility or outside Ontario to be brought into the province for research

We will continue working for much stronger protections for all animals used in research as the government moves on to implementing the regulations that will accompany this bill.

Ontario has passed Bill 75, which includes restricting “invasive medical research” on dogs and cats — an important step forward for animals and the advocates who have pushed for change.

The new law says it will limit “invasive medical research” on dogs and cats, prohibit breeding them specifically for research in Ontario supply facilities, and substantially increase penalties for breaking these laws.

But the law still allows exceptions and does not shut down the pipeline that sends animals from pounds — or animals bred within research facilities or in jurisdictions outside Ontario — into laboratories.

Key amendments we pushed for along the way were not adopted throughout the process, and we will continue working for much stronger protections for all animals used in research as the government moves on to implementing the regulations that will accompany this bill. ⚖

As we know with legislation that impacts animals, the details are important. We will continue to keep you informed in the coming weeks.

We have exciting news to share! 🎉 Our national campaign, “Paws Off Our Pets,” created in collaboration with Lush Cosmetics, has officially launched, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Supporters across Canada can purchase a special paw-shaped soap at participating Lush stores or online until May 20, with proceeds supporting our work to end the use of dogs and cats in invasive research, close the loopholes that still allow former pets to enter laboratories in Ontario, and raise awareness about the use of dogs and cats in research across Canada.

Supporters can also take action in-store at postcard signing stations, where postcards will be mailed to each provincial premier.✍🏼 We encourage you to post a photo from the store and tag your premier to bring attention to this serious issue.

The goal of this campaign is to raise public awareness about the continued use of dogs and cats in research across Canada and to shed light on practices that many Canadians are shocked to learn still occur today.

We’re building a coordinated group of supporters who want clear, concrete ways to take action—like emailing or meeting with their MPP, signing onto submissions, and sharing key updates when it matters most.

Right now, we’re especially looking for people represented by Conservative MPPs who are willing to help us speak up to protect dogs and cats from research by strengthening Bill 75.

Sign up to get occasional action alerts and background resources—no minimum commitment, just meaningful opportunities to speak up when you can:

With the introduction of Bill 75 and the proposed regulatory changes, the Ontario government signalled its intention to restrict the use of dogs and cats in research.

This is an important step forward, but our analysis shows that significant loopholes remain, leaving animals still vulnerable.

‼️CALL FOR WHISTLEBLOWERS AT YORK UNIVERSITY‼️

Last week, released an investigation that exposes the unimaginable cruelty that has been taking place at York University in Toronto. The investigation documents conditions involving 9 monkeys confined for up to 17 years for invasive neurological research, raising both ethical and scientific questions.

This research is scientifically unnecessary. Peer-reviewed literature — including publications by the researcher in question — demonstrates that eye-head coordination and sensorimotor integration studies can be conducted directly in human participants using non-invasive technologies such as Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) & Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has been informed, but with no response issued by York University, the current state of the monkeys remains shrouded in secrecy.

🚨 Animal Alliance of Canada is urgently seeking confidential information from anyone at York University regarding the current whereabouts and condition of the monkeys — whether they are still alive and on site, relocated, or transferred to another facility.
