Meet the Artistic Director and also a member of our cast!

Laura Schatz, who portrays Little Buttercup, was weaned on G&S as her parents founded MADS over 60 years ago. She did her first role at 5 as the Lord High Executioner’s Axe Bearer in The Mikado and she has been performing in and directing G&S ever since. She is delighted to be able to carry on the tradition of MADS with the help of her amazing husband, Cameron, who keeps things running behind the scenes and doesn’t mind her flirting with all the sailors as Little Buttercup. She is also very pleased to have her daughter, Michelle, on stage with her again this year.

Evan is playing the rascal Defendant in Trial by Jury. A misunderstood lover, the Defendant had promised himself to Angelina but soon fell in love with Ann Other. Like a story book prince, the Defendant left his first love to follow his heart. Unfortunately, a jealous Angelina is trying to get in the way of his happily ever after…

Evan (somewhat) recently completed his Bachelor of Voice Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University, studying with Canadian soprano Leslie Fagan. A lover of both musical theatre and opera, G&S is the perfect blend of his passions. Despite being a lawyer in his daily life, Evan has never seen a trial in person. He is eternally grateful to be able to gain this professional competency as the Defendant in G&S’s Trial by Jury. Performance highlights include Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and Yeomen of the Guard, Massenet’s Cendrillon, Poulenc’s Dialogue des Carmelites and Copland’s The Tender Land.
