Ever wonder why some houses in the Parkdale neighborhood look like castles with turret and tower features? Local heritage conservation architect and Sunnyside Historical Society volunteer Eric Charron will lead a tour through west Parkdale about these unique local house forms. Learn where and why they were built, their unique traits, and initiatives to highlight their value when the risks of losing them is increasing.

Older Toronto homes are filled with stained glass windows featuring birds, flowers, vines and intricate patterns. Who designed and made these leaded panes? Henry Knight, a stained glass artist and restorer, has made it his urgent mission to find out. This city’s housing stock in historic neighbourhoods is being demolished, and antique features like the windows are being lost.

On Sunday Ellen Moorhouse (another talented SHS member) is hosting a fascinating film at the R***e Theatre. The documentary is about Helen Lee’s and Keira Loughran’s quest to understand their grandmothers’ lives, sacrifice and accomplishments. The grandmothers are Foon Hay Lum, who lived in Parkdale and there’s the campaign to name a laneway after her, and Jean Lumb, former Junction store owner, restaurateur, Chinese community spokesperson and Order of Canada recipient.
