We are so proud to share that Claudia Chagoya’s work “A Rose for Remembrance”, presented as part of Dying.exhibit 2026, received a Juror’s Choice Award at the 2026 DesignTO Awards. 🌹

A Rose for Remembrance is a flower offering honouring murdered women, girls, transgender women, Two-Spirit People, and those who identified as women. Rose petals individually encased in resin, each inscribed with a name and dates — a quiet, profound act of commemoration that names lives cut short by gender violence and responds to the collective wounds left behind.

This is exactly the kind of work Dying.series exists to hold space for. Work that doesn’t look away. Work that names the unnamed. Work that turns grief into community.

Thank you, Claudia, for trusting us with this piece — and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

Rosas is a year-long project, completed between October 13, 2019, and October 12, 2020. Measuring 6’ x 5’ (183 x 152 cm), it features hundreds of red and white embroidered flowers of varying tones and sizes. I initially stitched 10 flowers daily, representing Mexico’s 2019 feminicide statistics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as domestic violence and feminicide rose to 11 women murdered daily, the piece grew to about 3,855 roses. The project confronts systemic violence in Mexico, transforming overwhelming statistics into a poignant, aesthetic experience, while honoring the memory of friends, sisters, daughters, and mothers whose lives were tragically lost.

Description: A Rose for Remembrance is a flower offering honoring murdered women, girls, transgender women, Two-Spirit People, and those who identified as women. It consists of rose petals individually encased in resin, each inscribed with a name and dates. The pink petals symbolize the enduring love and memory we hold for them.

The project seeks to name and commemorate lives cut short by gender violence and respond to collective wounds caused by such violence and the negligence of authorities. A Rose for Remembrance honors their lives and fosters community among bereaved families.

Title: Dream’s ashes

Artist: Mahsa Alikhani

Description: Dream’s Ashes is a large-scale installation paying tribute to the victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752. It comprises 176 UV-printed Iranian cypresses, forming a memorial for the Iranian and Canadian passengers who lost their lives. In Persian culture, the cypress, or Sarv, symbolizes life through its evergreen nature. Trees have long been revered for their life-giving qualities, and cypresses are traditionally planted in cemeteries, linking them to both life and death. My vision intertwines the world’s oldest known cypress in Iran, dating back four thousand years, with a burning image. Rather than easing the mind, it reminds us of our shared fate. These non-evergreen cypresses represent lives and dreams cut short by
human wrong decisions, embodying the grief of thousands.

Title: Making Space

Artist: Mary Calarco

Description: This installation makes space for difficult conversations, offering an area to reflect, learn and share. Take a moment to consider the frayed, hand-dyed fabrics around you. Settle into a rocking chair, read from a selection of books or sit with your thoughts as you contemplate your journey towards death. As a way to initiate conversation, share your end-of-life wishes and hang them for others to ponder.
In May 2024, my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. This devastating news was met with fear; we resisted what was in front of us, terrified of the outcome. But what if we viewed dying as a natural part of lived experience? When things fall apart, how do we greet the unravelling? Can we confront death as a way of celebrating life?

Title: Love & Loss
Artists: Jocelyn Brown, RN, MN and Ramune Luminaire

Description: A book and an art installation. A collaboration. Words by palliative care nurse Jocelyn Brown, who holds space for death every day. Visual art by Ramune Luminaire, who has learned that love is the only way through. Love & Loss begins with extracts from Brown’s journals, phone notes, and scribblings, documenting sixteen years of working with people living with terminal cancer. These stories express despair, anger, worry for those left behind, and unexpected moments of joy and peace. Luminaire’s drawings, prints, paintings, and photo transfers respond to Brown’s writing, sometimes illustrative, sometimes intuitive.
