World Hypertension Day is Sunday, May 17.

For clinicians, it is a timely reminder of the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement, early diagnosis, and practical, evidence-based treatment.

Hypertension Canada’s Primary Care Guideline was developed to support efficient implementation in everyday practice, with streamlined recommendations for diagnosing and treating hypertension in adults.

The guideline includes recommendations on standardized blood pressure measurement, out-of-office confirmation, treatment targets, lifestyle changes, and stepwise pharmacotherapy.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, making accurate measurement more important than ever.

This World Hypertension Day, if you measure your blood pressure at home, make sure you’re using a validated device. Accurate readings are an important first step in detecting and managing hypertension.

Hypertension Canada maintains a list of recommended blood pressure devices to help Canadians, healthcare providers, and organizations choose devices that have been reviewed for accuracy.

If you have hypertension, managing your condition is crucial to preventing serious health complications. Home blood pressure monitoring is a powerful tool in maintaining your health, and Hypertension Canada recommends it as an essential part of hypertension management.

One year ago, Hypertension Canada’s Primary Care Guideline was published in CMAJ, offering a practical, streamlined approach to diagnosing and treating hypertension in adults in primary care.

The guideline was developed with implementation in mind: standardized blood pressure measurement, confirmation with out-of-office assessment where possible, a clear diagnostic threshold, and stepwise treatment guidance to support everyday practice.

As we mark the one-year anniversary of this guideline, we want to hear from clinicians across Canada:

How have you implemented it into your practice?
