“A mother in Somalia traveled 200 kilometers with a child too sick to sit upright — only to arrive at one of our stabilization centers running dangerously low on therapeutic milk.

This is the hidden cost of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The closure has nearly doubled shipping times for life-saving nutrition supplies. The price of a carton of therapeutic milk has risen 44% in two years. Fuel costs inside Somalia have surged 150%.

We have 69 cartons of therapeutic milk left. Weeks of supply. Not months. The children arriving at our centers did not cause any of this. But they are paying the price.”

Yesterday our CEO, Onome Ako, had the opportunity to speak with Global News Edmonton for .

Conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability are driving hunger to crisis levels worldwide — with famine already declared in Gaza and Sudan.

But hunger is also a reality here at home. Nearly 1 in 4 Canadians lives in a food-insecure household, with many families forced to borrow money, choose cheaper but less nutritious food, or go without. Affordability now outweighs nutrition almost 2 to 1 in food decisions.

Food insecurity is, at its core, an affordability issue. While supports like the Groceries and Essentials Benefit can help, lasting change requires addressing the root causes so every Canadian can access nutritious food with dignity.

Thank you to the Global News Edmonton team for creating space for this important conversation.

Today is . Around 673 million people face chronic hunger, and 2.3 billion people face food insecurity worldwide.

Conflict, displacement, disease outbreaks, and rising hunger are putting millions of lives at risk. In countries like Gaza, Lebanon and Sudan, families are facing extraordinary hardship, and the need for timely support has rarely been greater.

Together, we are helping deliver lifesaving nutrition, health care, food security, water, sanitation, and emergency support to families and communities facing this crisis.

On World Hunger Day, we recognize the urgency of acting now to help communities facing severe hunger.

An Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC is raising serious concern as cases rapidly spread across several regions, including Goma.

This outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain — for which no vaccine or treatment currently exists. High population movement in mining areas is making it even harder to trace contacts and control transmission.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation given the extremely high level of humanitarian needs. In Ituri province, our teams on the ground have already begun raising awareness among medical staff by purchasing and distributing protective equipment to limit the risk of infection in health centers,” says Julie Drouet, Country Director for Action Against Hunger in the .

Immediate international support and funding are critical to containing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable communities before it escalates further.

Rainfall, violence and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are further exacerbating hunger in Sudan. This is the reality on the ground in Sudan right now.

New data from the IPC — one of the main global tools for measuring hunger developed by UN agencies — warns that nearly 20 million people in Sudan face high levels of acute food insecurity.

This reflects a context of chronic hunger exacerbated by more than three years of conflict, adverse weather, the collapse of basic services (37% of health services have been destroyed) and the world’s largest displacement crisis (13.5 million displaced people).

Lebanon | Humanitarian needs remain critically high

Despite the ceasefire, humanitarian needs across Lebanon continue to deepen as displacement, economic strain, and limited access to essential services place growing pressure on affected families.

Nearly one quarter of the population is projected to face acute food insecurity between April and August 2026, with the sharpest deterioration in southern governorates.

Overcrowded shelters, unsafe returns, and disrupted services continue to increase protection risks, while many families returning home still find damaged or uninhabitable houses.

While some collective shelters have closed, many remain under growing strain, particularly in the South and Beirut. Humanitarian needs remain severe in both inside and outside shelters, especially for families living in precarious conditions.

Reduced visibility must not be mistaken for reduced needs. Humanitarian needs in Lebanon will remain critical for months, while funding constraints continue to limit the scale of the response.

What does motherhood teach you about leadership? And what does leadership teach you about motherhood?

Our CEO, Onome Ako, sat down with VITA Daily for a Mother’s Day Q&A reflecting on motherhood, leadership, and identity.

She shares how becoming a mother has shaped her leadership, how her work has shaped the parent she is at home, and what it means to lead a humanitarian organization at a moment when mothers and children around the world are facing a deepening hunger crisis.

She also speaks to what Canadian families can do this Mother's Day to feel more connected to mothers globally.

🚨 New data from Lebanon shows hunger remains alarmingly high.

1.24 million people in Lebanon are still facing food insecurity. With food increasingly unaffordable or unavailable, families are forced to skip meals and cut out essentials, like protein.

At the same time, new waves of displacement are exacerbating the crisis.

Despite the ceasefire, new attacks in the districts of Nabatieh and the Bekaa Valley have led to further evacuation orders, forcing families to flee north again.

At Action Against Hunger, our teams are adapting and expanding our response—reaching hard‑to‑access areas with food, nutrition support, and lifesaving assistance. But without sustained humanitarian access and resources, hunger will persist.

🚨The latest Global Report on Food Crises finds that severe hunger has more than doubled since 2016, now affecting 266 million people worldwide.

Conflict remains the leading driver—80% of people facing crisis levels of hunger live in conflict‑affected areas.

And for the first time in history, famine has been declared in two countries at the same time.

The report also warns that the response is falling short. Humanitarian funding has dropped sharply, returning to levels last seen nearly a decade ago.

The message is urgent: restore life‑saving aid, protect early warning systems and data, and address the conflicts pushing millions deeper into hunger.
