When is the last time you went to bed with a grin on your face? Tonight, I definitely will be. What a fun evening!
Thank you so much to our members and guests who joined us. Absolutely well done to the debaters, one of whom stepped out of her comfort zone to be a debater due to a debater having to unfortunately cancel. One thing being a member of Toastmasters certainly does, is... makes us comfortable with stepping out of our comfort zone.
The debaters clearly took the topic seriously and had very informative responses. By the end of the debate, I certainly felt like practising to be more ambidextrous.
One 'food for thought' I left the meeting with:
"Is someone successful, 'top of their game' because they are ambidextrous? Or, is it because they have the determination and drive to succeed irregardless of which is their dominant side? What about persons who do not have full use of their limbs, yet develop alternative ways to move through daily life?"
We also learnt that, "Why aren't we equally capable with our left and right sides? Wouldn't this have given us a survival advantage?" was an actual question and response in the New Scientist magazine.
As an attendee pointed out, we are all likely to be ambidextrous, to a point... isn't that what touchtyping is about? Trust me. I certainly could not get through life without being a competent touch typist.
As for table topics. Well! The questions/situation was posed to encourage us, as an advance club to really use our storytelling, and listening skills. The question incorporated a variation of the word of the day, plasticity. The question? "The day I dropped my plastic trousers." The inspiration for the question was from one of the Club Officer Training sessions, where a facilitator shared that whilst on stage, her trousers did drop!
(Some people view club officer training as a necessary evil. Not this evening's Table Topics Mistress. She saw it as an opportunity to receive ideas for our club meetings.)
