It’s March! Which means it’s time to get pumped about Grow A Row! All you have to do to participate is sow a little extra in your garden with the intent to donate the harvest to the Burlington Food Bank. Last year we delivered 250+lbs of produce, this year we’d like to double that!

EVERY kind of produce is wanted: grocery staples like tomatoes and lettuce, fun bonuses like hot peppers and herbs, and even potatoes! Whatever you have is perfect.

Wash your produce and drop in the morning at the food bank, and it will be distributed to families that day.

If you need seeds, growing tools, materials or info, please reach out. We have an amazingly knowledgeable community partner in Halton Food and they have an abundance of growing expertise.

We also have some fun surprises to come this year! If you’d like to volunteer at our Grow A Row space at the Central Community Garden, please reach out to me!

Happy planting! 🌱

As much as we love the summer growing season, the winter season is quickly approaching! It's time to start thinking about how to prepare our gardens for .

First things first, it is important to remove any rotting or finished plants from the garden. Be sure to remove any weeds, especially invasive species, from your garden. Next, prepare and amend the soil in your garden. Based on the soil quality and texture, this could mean adding mulch, manure, compost, or other chemical-free fertilizer (such as kelp, bone meal, etc.). Consider planting cover crops to prevent soil erosion, increase soil nutrients, and improve soil structure. Take time to prune perennial plants (where needed) and plant bulbs.

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing more information about how to prepare your gardens for the winter season! How have you begun preparing your garden for the winter season?

There’s definitely still time to grow a row! Choose fast-maturing varieties where you can, or experiment with small cold frames or poly tunnels to grow into the winter.

Vancouver's Sunset Nursery normally grows flowers for parks and green space across Vancouver. For the first time, the park board is using some extra space there to grow vegetables for non-profit organizations that provide food for families in need.
