This World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate tutors like Rameen in South Sudan, who are helping young people find their way back to education.

Through War Child’s Pathways to Empowerment (P2E) project, Rameen teaches agriculture in the catch-up learning program, designed to give young people who have dropped out of school another opportunity to learn. She has seen young women, including mothers with babies, return to the classroom eager and ready to learn.

“They are even eager to learn. And they come early. They are punctual.” — Madam Rameen

P2E also equips teachers with student-centered teaching methods that encourage critical thinking and participation, helping educators create classrooms where learners can thrive.

Today, we celebrate the teachers creating second chances, one classroom at a time.

On the International Day of Non-Violence, we’re reminded that peace is not only the absence of conflict, it’s also built through the skills young people use to navigate challenges, communicate and resolve problems.

In Afghanistan, 16-year-old Asadullah grew up surrounded by poverty and conflict at home. Through War Child’s Life Skills program, he learned to manage his emotions, communicate with others, solve problems and make positive decisions. Today, he says he has greater confidence in himself and hope for his future.

For children and young people affected by conflict, these skills can help break cycles of violence and build stronger, more peaceful communities.

Peace starts with possibility. And young people can help lead the way.

“You’re seeing me standing in front of you as a strong woman.”

Sitima Rose brought her family to Uganda, escaping violence in South Sudan. After a long, challenging road, she’s joined War Child’s BRIDGE project and gained skills to build greater stability for her family.

BRIDGE supports young women with opportunities they need to earn an income, support their families, and put food on the table.

For 12-year-old Nasir, access to healthcare meant getting back to the life he knows.

After injuring his leg while herding sheep in a remote community in Afghanistan, limited access to medical care meant his wound became infected and increasingly painful. At a War Child-supported health clinic, Nasir received treatment, medication, and follow-up care close to his community.

Today, he has fully recovered and is back to helping his family, spending time with friends, and looking ahead to opportunities to learn and build his future.

In South Sudan, Johnson faced challenges that made learning difficult, from sharing notebooks with siblings to going without pens for class.

Through War Child Canada’s Geared for Success program, Johnson received essential school supplies — exercise books, pens, and pencils — that helped him stay organized, participate fully in class, and regain confidence in his studies.

“My family no longer struggles to buy materials, and I can take notes and revise my lessons properly,” he says.

Johnson now dreams of excelling in his exams and helping improve his school.
When young people are equipped to learn, they build the foundation for stronger, more peaceful communities.

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is built through education, opportunity, strong communities, and the ability for people to shape their own futures.

This , we recognize that lasting peace requires long-term investment in the people and communities most affected by conflict.

War Child works alongside local communities to strengthen education, livelihoods, protection, and the systems people rely on, helping address the conditions that can perpetuate cycles of conflict.

Because peace is not simply what happens when conflict ends. It is something we build together, for generations to come.

For many girls in Afghanistan, returning to school is not simple.

Through , War Child Canada supported the re-enrolment of 1,000 out-of-school girls in the past year, providing learning materials and school supplies to help remove barriers to primary education. Across the project to date, 2,000 children have been supported back into learning.
At the same time, War Child is working with public schools to strengthen learning environments by supporting improvements like temporary classrooms, solar power, computers and other essential resources.

Because getting children back into primary school is only the first step. Helping them stay there matters too.
