North Shore Steelhead Association A Not-for-Profit association aimed at preserving and conserving the cold-water fishery of the tributaries of Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario, Canada

The primary concern of the founding members was the protection and enhancement of the north shore migratory Rainbow Trout (Steelhead) fishery, but their foresight led to the inclusion of all coldwater species in our constitution. This, by default, includes all species that use Lake Superior tributaries in their life cycle. The Association's constitution stresses public education and close associat

ion with authoritative bodies for resource conservation. Our financial base is developed exclusively from fundraising and donations from supporters. These activities not only generate capital for our projects, they also heighten public awareness of the need for environmental protection of Lake Superior's North Shore.

After 2 failed attempts to install the fish counters and fish fencing, we finally got them in this morning. Hopefully we will document some upwards migrants, and those fish that may have already spawned and are dropping back to the big lake. Thanks to KEM Contacting for their assistance

Steelhead are incredible jumpers, capable of leaping up to 10-12 feet high. Renowned their strength, agility, and "cartwheeling" jumps out of the water. If these fish were people - they could be Olympic besties with Simone Biles. The Economist magazine on Aug.3, 2024 said Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history. Clearly bestie material.

Spring steelhead fishing requires a layering system to adapt to highly variable weather, focusing on moisture-wicking, insulation, and waterproof outerwear. The key is to avoid cotton and denim, which absorb water and dry slowly, leading to dangerous heat loss.

Consider a base layer like marino wool long underwear, mid-layer (insulation) try a fleece or wool sweater and pants. For the outer layer (protection) breathable chest waders with a wading belt are crucial for safety and comfort in the river. Wading boots with rubber soles and a hooded, waterproof jacket will keep you sure footed and cozy for a day on the river.
