There's a lot of phony content on social media. Can you tell what's fake versus what's real when you're looking for emergency updates on a site like Facebook?

In October 2025, a failing unauthorized dam at the outlet of Fadear Lake, a remote area of the TNRD, generated significant public interest. The first photo below shows an accurate photo of the unauthorized dam, taken by TNRD staff. The other photo is an unrealistic, AI-generated image with a sensationalized header, which was used in a post by a Facebook account that intentionally misrepresented the situation and was shared more widely on social media.

With a bit of critical thinking, it is easy to debunk the AI photo as being phony in this situation. But fake photos of emergencies created with AI can often be harder to spot than this.

If you come across an image or content online about a wildfire or flood and it seems sensational, or doesn't seem quite right, don't share it right away. Take a few moments to fact check information from official, trusted sources, to be sure that what you are seeing and sharing is accurate.
