The BC Professional Fire Fighters' Association extends our deepest condolences to the families, friends and fellow members of those lost at CFB Wainwright in Alberta.

Military and Local fire crews worked together through the night under extremely difficult conditions to protect others. Many in the fire service have also served in the Canadian Armed Forces, and our members hold deep respect and gratitude for all who protect Canada. Our country depends on the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces. Our rights, our freedoms and our way of life are defended every day by Canadians who answer the call.

Thank you to those who donated blood, and to the paramedics, nurses and doctors in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary caring for the injured.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by the tragic incident in Wainwright, Alberta, particularly the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives or been injured.

IAFF members were among the emergency responders who assisted with this difficult incident, and we recognize the professionalism, dedication, and compassion demonstrated by all first responders involved.

On behalf of the IAFF Sixth District, we extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who responded and want our members, their families, and the Wainwright community to know that we stand ready to provide any additional support or assistance needed during this difficult time.

Congratulations to Terrace’s Newly Elected Mayor and Council!

Terrace Professional Firefighters Local 2685 would like to congratulate our newly elected Mayor and City Councillors.

We also want to thank every candidate who put their name forward in this election. Running for public office takes time, commitment, and a willingness to serve your community, and we appreciate everyone who stepped up.

Throughout the election, we appreciated the opportunity to meet with candidates and have meaningful conversations about the future of fire protection and emergency services in Terrace.

We look forward to building on those conversations and working collaboratively with our new Mayor and Council to strengthen public safety and ensure our fire service continues to grow alongside our community.

Congratulations again to everyone elected, and thank you to all who participated in our local democracy.

October 10th is . This year’s global theme is about lived experience, and in the fire service that means members talking honestly about what the job takes out of them.

There is power in sharing our stories. In members willing to say “I’m not okay” out loud, and crews who listen without judgement. Every time someone tells their story, it gets easier for the next person to tell theirs. That’s what real change looks like.

If you’re struggling, reach out to your peer support team or union leadership. If someone on your crew has changed recently, check in. You’d never let them go into a fire alone. Don’t let them carry this alone either.

We’re pleased to see firefighter staffing receiving attention during this year’s municipal election.

Thank you to the Terrace Standard for highlighting an issue we’ve been working hard to bring to the attention of our community and elected officials.

With only two, and sometimes three, firefighters on duty, Terrace continues to face challenges in providing the level of emergency response our growing community needs.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve met with every candidate for Mayor and Council. We’re encouraged that every candidate expressed support for working toward a minimum of four firefighters on the first arriving apparatus.

We recognize that reaching this goal may require a phased approach, but that doesn’t mean progress needs to wait. We’re still hopeful that additional staffing can be achieved this year, and we want to see a clear plan established for how the City intends to reach that four firefighter minimum.

We understand that municipal budgets involve difficult decisions and competing priorities. However, as Terrace continues to grow, including potential industrial development, we believe emergency services need to grow alongside our community.

Our goal has never been to make this a partisan issue. It’s about ensuring Terrace residents receive the emergency response they deserve and firefighters have the resources to do their jobs safely and effectively.

We appreciate the community’s continued support and look forward to continuing these conversations with the next Mayor and Council.
