Updated Statement from Fire Chief Brousson – Terrace Bowling Alley Fire Deemed Suspicious

On May 21, 2026, the Terrace Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire at the Terrace Bowling Alley on Lazelle Avenue. The Terrace Fire Department, staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, deployed two career firefighters in under two minutes from the time of dispatch. Crews were quickly supported by nine off-duty career firefighters, Fire Chief Brousson as Incident Command, and the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department through the automatic mutual aid agreement.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames at the front north corner of the building, where fire had already extended into the roof and attic space. Due to extenuating fire growth, crews transitioned from an interior fire attack to a defensive operation to ensure firefighter and public safety. As portions of the roof assembly began to collapse, an excavator was brought in to assist firefighters in safely exposing hidden fire and helping bring the incident under control.

Through the fire investigation, it was determined the fire originated at the front north exterior corner of the structure and is being deemed suspicious. The Terrace RCMP has worked closely with the Terrace Fire Department throughout the investigation, and the General Investigation Section has identified two persons of interest in relation to this incident. The investigation remains active and ongoing with regards to the RCMP. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Terrace RCMP.

With the fire investigation now concluded, the building will be fully demolished and site remediation efforts will begin. The Terrace Fire Department asks members of the public to stay clear of the area and allow contractors and crews to complete the work safely and efficiently.

The Terrace Fire Department would like to thank the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department, BC Emergency Health Services, RCMP, City staff, and all supporting agencies for their professionalism and teamwork throughout this challenging event.

Most importantly, our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the loss of a long-standing community landmark that created extraordinary memories for generations of Terrace residents.
