We recently had the pleasure of a visit from Pastor Jamie Joseph (right) of the North Sydney Seven Day Adventist Church, along with community member Vince Penney. Pastor Joseph asked to meet Interim Chief MacKinnon and talk about the volunteer work they do for the health and safety of our community.

Cape Breton Regional Police have four persons in custody for a shooting in Sydney earlier this morning.

Police responded to the parking lot of McDonald’s on Welton Street at approximately 4:30 AM where witnesses reported seeing a person fire a shot at two other persons running towards Welton Street. Officers located three people in a vehicle at the scene, which also contained a firearm, and all three were arrested. A second vehicle fled the scene on police arrival, which officers tracked to the area of James Street where it went off the road and the driver ran. With assistance from the K9 Unit and Emergency Response team, this person was located and arrested at a residence on Lingan Road. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Police seized both vehicles and continue to investigate; this is being treated as an isolated incident between individuals known to each other.

Please avoid the Pitt Street area of Sydney where a live explosive was located inside a building this morning. Officers are evacuating nearby buildings, have closed the street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic and have the area contained while awaiting arrival of Military personnel and the Explosive Disposal Unit for further assistance.

Follow the direction of police as they secure the area; updates will be provided when they are available.

On behalf of everyone at Halifax Regional Police, have a safe and happy holiday season.

While this time of year brings joy and happiness for many, it can also be a time of stress and loneliness for others. Please take a moment to check in on each other – your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. Those extra minutes spent offering kindness and support to one another go a long way.

Our communities are safer and stronger when we look out for each other.

Happy holidays.
