With winter service changes now live, TransLink has added more frequent trips, longer service hours, and better connections across several Surrey routes.

Overall transit service in Surrey is now up 40% compared to 2020, which makes a real difference for students, workers, families, and anyone relying on public transit to get around daily.

Small changes on paper, big impact in real life. More reliability, fewer waits, and better connections as the city keeps growing.

They weren’t firefighters. They didn’t have gear. They didn’t have time to think.
When a house on Jersey Drive exploded, Jared Rempel and Steve Appleyard heard someone screaming inside and ran toward the flames.

With debris everywhere and fire closing in, they forced their way through a blocked entrance, ripped a door off its hinges, and pulled the injured man to safety. Only after did reality catch up, the heat, the risk, the “what ifs.”

Neither man wants the spotlight. They’ve been quick to credit other neighbours and the first responders who arrived minutes later. But in that moment, before sirens and uniforms, it was two ordinary people choosing to act.

“I would do it again,” one of them said.
And that simple truth says everything.

This is community. This is courage. This is Surrey. 💛

This is a moment South Surrey can feel proud of. 💛
Ibrahim Shaaban from École Earl Marriott Secondary and Aiden Rothmund from Grandview Heights Secondary have been named finalists for the Loran Award, a $100,000 scholarship awarded to some of Canada’s most promising young leaders.

Out of more than 5,000 applicants nationwide, only 90 students reached this final stage. That alone speaks volumes about their character, leadership, and commitment to service.

The Loran Award looks beyond grades. It recognizes students who lead with integrity, give back to their communities, and show courage in how they live and learn. No matter the final outcome, both Ibrahim and Aiden have already earned a place among Canada’s standout youth.

This is one way to give back that really matters. 💚
Through its Grassroots Giving campaign, W**d Man collected 3,540 pounds of food for B.C. food banks, including support for the Surrey Food Bank Society, helping provide close to 3,000 meals for families across the province.

From Surrey and Abbotsford to Victoria and Black Creek, the donations reached communities where food insecurity continues to rise. And when combined with contributions across Canada and the U.S., the campaign delivered more than 108,000 pounds of food in 2025.

It’s a reminder that local action adds up, and that businesses can play a powerful role in supporting the communities they serve. 🌱👏

Got a teen who loves tinkering, coding, or building things? This one’s worth bookmarking. 💻🤖
UBC’s Geering Up: Teen Techies program is coming to the Fleetwood Library with four free Saturday sessions designed for students in Grades 8–10.

Teens will get hands-on with microcontrollers like Arduinos and microbots, learning how code turns into real-world actions. No prior experience needed, just curiosity (and a laptop). The sessions are designed to start simple and offer extra challenges for those ready to go further.

It’s a great introduction to engineering and STEM, relaxed, practical, and led by people who know how to make complex ideas feel approachable.

Free to join, but registration is required and similar programs are coming to Guildford next. 🚀

Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen over coffee. ☕

B.C.’s Seniors Advocate, Dan Levitt, is coming to Surrey for two Coffee Social gatherings, one at Guildford Recreation Centre in the morning and another at Newton Seniors Centre in the afternoon.

There’s no formal presentation, no speeches, just open conversation in a friendly space. It’s a chance for seniors to connect with each other, share what’s working (and what’s not), and learn more about supports and resources available across B.C.

If you’re a senior, a caregiver, or someone who simply wants to listen and be part of the conversation, this is a welcoming place to start. Sometimes being heard is just as important as being helped. 💛

This is about more than self-defence, it’s about believing in yourself. 💛
Six female officers from Surrey Police Service are volunteering their time to run EmpowerHer, a free workshop series designed to help women feel safer, stronger, and more confident.

The sessions focus on situational awareness, understanding personal rights, basic physical self-defence skills, and mindset, all taught in a supportive, judgment-free space. Women who arrive feeling unsure often leave standing taller, with a renewed sense of confidence.

Workshops have already reached diverse community groups across Surrey, and plans are in place to expand even further in 2026, including schools and larger, cross-community sessions.

Sometimes empowerment starts with one simple reminder:
you are valued, supported, and worthy of protection, including by yourself. 💪

Learning doesn’t only live in books, sometimes it lives in the land, the voice, and the memory.
At KPU’s Surrey campus, a new Indigenous oral storytelling video series is making space for that kind of learning.

The collection begins with Elder-in-Residence Lekeyten, who shares stories rooted directly in the grounds where students study today. Filmed among the cedar trees on campus, the videos connect history, place, and lived knowledge in a way classrooms rarely get to experience.

What makes this project especially meaningful is care, Indigenous ownership of stories is respected, Elders’ voices lead the learning, and students are invited to understand the land they’re on more deeply.

It’s a quiet but powerful step toward education that listens, honours, and remembers. 🌿

Not everyone feels joy during the holidays and these Surrey students understood that. 💛
A class at Old Yale Road Elementary spent time writing letters to people who may be alone this Christmas, offering encouragement, warmth, and simple reminders that they matter.

Their words weren’t flashy or rehearsed. They were honest, thoughtful, and deeply kind, the kind of messages many adults struggle to say out loud.

Surrey has a long sports history and now it’s time to honour the people behind it. 🏅
Nominations are open for the very first Surrey Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating athletes, coaches, teams, volunteers, and game-changers who made a lasting impact on sport in our city.

Whether it’s a coach who believed in you, a team that defined an era, or a volunteer who kept things running year after year, this is your chance to put their name forward before the Dec. 31 deadline.

The Hall will launch next spring with an exhibit at the Museum of Surrey, with plans for a permanent home at the future City Centre Arena.

If someone helped build Surrey’s sports legacy, now’s the moment to recognize them. 👏⚽🏀
