SHF 🤝 SFU

A milestone moment for the City of Surrey.

We're excited to announce a new partnership with Simon Fraser University to strengthen health research and innovation across Surrey and the South Fraser region through the Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network (SH Network).

Together, we're helping connect health care, academia, research and philanthropy to support hospital-based innovation, medical education and better patient outcomes close to home.

This partnership also builds on the momentum of the new SFU School of Medicine, welcoming its inaugural class in 2026, the first new medical school in Western Canada in nearly 60 years.

By bringing research, learning and care closer together, this partnership is helping strengthen a connected ecosystem of care for patients and communities across the region.

The women who shape us leave fingerprints on everything we become.

For Dr. Marietta Van Den Berg, compassion, courage and resilience were passed down through generations of mothers who taught her what it means to care deeply for others, even in the hardest moments.

Reflecting on her own mother, she shares:
“Thank you, for always having a lap for me, even when I chose not to sit on it.”

Today, as a leader at Surrey Memorial Hospital and a mother and grandmother herself, she continues that legacy through the lives she touches every day in our region.

This Mother’s Day, we honour the legacy of mothers who guide us, strengthen us and inspire us to keep building a better future for the next generation. 💙

“Even if you can make a small impact in someone’s day,” he says, “that matters.”

As a nurse clinician at Fraser Health's Movement Disorder Clinic at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, Robby works alongside patients and their caregivers throughout their journey with Parkinson's.

Every small improvement can make a huge difference," he says. "Helping someone move a little more easily, sleep a little better, or feel more confident with their day to day. Those are big wins."

With over 120,000 cases, Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurological condition in Canada.

For people living with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders, care doesn’t stop at diagnosis. It evolves, requiring long-term support and the specialized expertise of people like Robby.

We’re sharing an important update for cardiac care at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) ❤️

After opening its Cath Lab on December 6, SMH is already expanding its services. As of April 27, the Cath Lab now provides in-house care for STEMI patients during daytime hours.

A STEMI is a severe type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart and it requires immediate treatment.

With specialized teams, equipment, and procedures now in place, more patients can receive urgent, life-saving treatment right here at SMH.

This means faster access to care, reduced treatment times, and fewer transfers, helping improve outcomes when every minute matters.

This progress reflects the collective effort of clinical teams, hospital leadership, and community support that helped make the Cath Lab possible. Congratulations to the team on reaching this significant milestone.

For people living with Parkinson's, care doesn't stop at diagnosis. Support is ongoing. It requires coordination, expertise, and a team that can adapt alongside patients and their families.

As one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions in Canada, and with Surrey one of the fastest-growing cities, the need for centralized, coordinated chronic care has never been greater.

At the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, the Movement Disorders Program brings specialists, therapies, and allied health care together under one roof, making truly connected care possible.

Through our Chronic Disease & Therapy Pillar of Care, donor support is helping expand access to this kind of integrated, compassionate care, so people living with Parkinson's don’t have to navigate it alone.

Because living with a chronic disease takes more than treatment. It takes a whole community, standing beside you.
