Buffalo Lake Nature Club The Buffalo Lake Naturalists is a nature club based in Stettler, Alberta. The focus of this club is the wildlife and natural areas in and around Stettler.

We hold monthly meetings (excluding June, July and August) with featured talks by various experts.

Thank you to Dr. Dayna Goldsmith for coming to talk last night about avian influenza and teaching us how it’s transmitted, why it’s important as well as how we can help prevent the spread!

Next weeks presentation will be on Health and our Natural World with Louis Ducsharm from the Camrose Public Library. Join us on August 6th, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre to learn about how engaging with nature can affect our physical, mental, and social health!

On Friday July 24th, we invite anyone who is able to come on a nature walk with us on the west side of the Buffalo Lake Moraine Conservation Area. president Karin L. will be leading the walk along with Bob T., a local very familiar with the natural history of the area. We will meet at 1:00 pm along Range Rd 200 north of TWP Rd 404, but **strongly encourage you** to reach out to Red Deer Watershed Alliance via the email above (sciencecoordinator @ rdrwa.ca no spaces) and register if you plan on attending!

PLEASE, also remember your bug spray, a hat, sunscreen, wear close-toed boots and pants (mosquitoes and deer flies are bad in the area), binoculars, and water. We typically like to go on a “slow hike” because there’s lots to see and lots to talk about!

Meet at 6 pm at Kuhnen Natural Area (south of Hwy 11, along Range Road 23-0) south of Alix.
Be prepared for mosquitos and wear waterproof footwear, as the trail may be muddy. Following the walk, we will meet at 39431 Range Road 23-0 for a fireside social. See the July newsletter for directions or email [email protected] for more info!

ONLY ONE DAY AWAY!!! So far, the weather is promising for Sunday, July 5th for us to gather together to see and record as many butterflies (and other insects) as possible!

***It’s NOT too late to register either! We’ll have copies of our waiver and a sign-up sheet when you get there, should you decide at the very last minute to join us!***

Please note we’ll get started at 10 am, so be there early to sign-in and/or sign-up!

ALSO NOTE: Kids are welcome! Please bring/wear closed-toe shoes (cacti), lots of water, your lunch, hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, nets and collection containers, if you have some.

🐛 Not an infestation - just a seasonal guest.

This year, some of our parks are experiencing a natural, cyclical boom of tent caterpillars that occurs approximately every 10-12 years. Tent caterpillars are a native species that play an important role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Next time you run into them, don’t fret about these fuzzy critters - they’ll be on their way soon enough! The caterpillar stage of their lifecycle typically lasts 4–6 weeks, until they spin cocoons and transition into moths in July.

We are very excited to announce that our Annual Butterfly Count at Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park is on for Sunday, July 5th starting at 10 AM! We will first meet at the upper parking lot and then once we go over a few things, we will travel down to the lower area in the valley to begin our search for butterflies. We strongly encourage you to register for the event by contacting us at [email protected] and sign a waiver we will have for you.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that this is weather dependent; if we have some bad weather we may be forced to reschedule, however we hope that this will not be the case!
