Geological Association of Canada

Geological Association of Canada The Geological Association of Canada (GAC®) was formed in 1947 with the objective to promote, discuss and disseminate geological knowledge.

On February 14, 1947 a group of geologists met at the Engineers' Club in Toronto, Ontario to create the Geological Institute of Canada. The Institute was later renamed the Geological Association of Canada (GAC®) at a second meeting held on March 11, 1947. This meeting resulted in the formation of a preliminary constitution and set of bylaws, election of the first council and the designation of 140

charter members. From the outset, GAC® was designed to fill a role similar to that of the Geological Society of America: bridging a gap between the industry focused Geological Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the scientific objectives of Section IV of the Royal Society of Canada.

The 50 Under 50 Award

The 50 Under 50 Award is a joint initiative of the Geological Society of America (GSA), the Geological Association of Canada (GAC-AGC), and the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana (SGM) that honors outstanding mid-career geoscientists across North America who are making significant contributions through research, service, and mentorship.

Up to 50 geoscientists under the age of 50 will be recognized each year, and awardees will be highlighted by the societies and invited to participate in special sessions and activities at upcoming meetings, helping elevate their work and expand their professional visibility.

Applications can be submitted in English, Spanish, or French at geosociety.co/50-Under-50, where you can also find a complete list of application requirements.

Congratulations to the 2026 Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award Recipient, Nicolas Gomez!

Nicolas’ doctoral research investigates the sedimentary, geochronological, and geochemical record of the Gaskiers Glaciation (589–580 Ma) preserved in the Bonavista Peninsula, Avalon Zone, Newfoundland. The study aims to disentangle the climatic and tectonic controls that shaped the Ediacaran glaciogenic successions of West Avalonia and to refine their temporal and stratigraphic framework through field mapping integrated with multi-proxy geochronology.

🌍✨ Calling all geoscience grad students! ✨🌍

Applications for the 2026 Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award are now open!

💰$5,000 awaits a graduate student whose research features a strong field mapping component and contributes to understanding the geological history of Canada.

The award celebrates the legacy of Mary-Claire Ward — a passionate advocate for geoscience and mapping who believed that a strong geological knowledge base drives Canada’s mineral sector and discovery potential.

📅 Deadline: December 15, 2025
🧭 Apply online: https://pdac.ca/students/financial-support/mary-claire-ward-geoscience-award

✈️ The recipient will be invited to accept the award at either the PDAC Convention (Mar 1–4, 2026) or the GAC-MAC Meeting (May 25–28, 2026) — with travel, accommodation, and registration covered!

Let’s celebrate field mapping, exploration, and the next generation of geoscientists shaping our understanding of Canada’s geology.

Comprising $5,000 and a certificate, the award is given annually to encourage and support a full-time, graduate student in Canada.
