THEY SENTENCED CUDJO, GREEN, ANNIMO, QUASH & GIFT to death by burning at the stake on this day 27th October in 1736

The magistrates and judges who led the investigation and trials during the 1736 Antigua slave conspiracy were Robert Arbuthnot, John Vernon, Ashton Warner, and Nathaniel Gilbert.
• Robert Arbuthnot: Justice of the peace who initiated and led the initial inquiry into the plot starting on October 11, 1736.
• John Vernon: Member of the court of commissioners and judges who tried the accused conspirators.
• Ashton Warner: Member of the colonial court that oversaw the investigation, trials, and sentencings.
• Nathaniel Gilbert: Magistrate and commissioner who participated in the legal proceedings and interrogations. (24 years later he would become one of the founders of the Methodist Church in Antigua).
Governor William Matthew also oversaw the colonial administration and responses during the panic.

Born on 20th October 1818, in Antigua & Barbuda, John Andrew Buckley would go on to become THE FIRST BLACK MAN IN THE WORLD to be ordained as a Moravian Pastor.
THE STREET LEADING TO THE MORAVIAN CHURCH IN GREENBAY, IS BUCKLEY STREET.
On January 3rd 1856 the Moravians recorded the ordination of their first male Black missionary. John Andrew Buckley was born on October 20th 1818 to John and Hannah Buckley on the island of Antigua. When he was twenty-three years old he married Charity Ann Martin and they had ELEVEN children.
Brother Buckley was a teacher at the Moravian school in Greenbay and later became a preacher. The White Moravian missionaries who had been responsible for the Greenbay outpost struggled to fill their small church. Buckley slowly assumed responsibility for Greenbay as the missionaries concentrated on areas where converts were more willing to work with them and could contribute to the collection plate consistently. The dynamic, charismatic home grown preacher soon had more visitors trying to get into his services than the church could accommodate. Buckley solved the problem by building a new wing in 1855. He did this even as his white counterparts argued bitterly over the idea of ordaining him.
Bishop George Wall Westerby (Have yoo visited the Westerby Memorial at the bottom of High Street) sent a letter to England seeking permission to ordain this 36 year old Antiguan. What happened next may seem strange but in the eighteenth and nineteenth century it was not unusual for the Moravians to ask Christ to intervene and make important decisions for them. This was true especially for controversial issues. Christ was asked to participate through the casting of lots. Three times the Unity Elders Conference agreed to cast lots to decide if John A Buckley should be ordained. Twice, based on their method, Christ rejected him but both Westerby and Buckley were determined men and the third time (November 1855) was the charm. Christ said yes.
John’s wife, Charity became an acolyte on the evening of January 2nd 1856, a day before her husband’s name was etched into the history books of not just Antigua & Barbuda but the world. Antiguan born John Andrew Buckley, a man of African descent, born when enslaving Africans was acceptable, became an ordained Moravian minister. He laid the foundation for a diocese where one hundred and sixty years later 95% or more of the clergy look like Reverend John A Buckley.
Buckley brought many of the former enslaved residents and their offspring into the faith. He knew however that his strict rules turned many away. Buckley demanded that everyone find a way to live up to their financial obligations to the mission even in times of drought and hardship. In a letter to his superiors he expressed his disappointment in the young people of the day. The good Reverent felt that having been raised in and educated by the church they should have been better able to live Godly lives.
Reverent Buckley retired in 1879 and died on December 31, 1884 at his home in Greenbay. Charity Ann Buckley outlived her husband by 22 years and was able to usher in the twentieth century. She died in St. John’s in 1906.

There is no known description or image of Prince Klass, also known as King Court.

This artistic rendition by Antiguan Artist Anson Henry offers an interpretation
of this man.

The image invites visitors at the Museum to imagine and reflect on a part of Antigua's historical past.

By today in 1736 in Antigua, an African man they called Court, also known as Prince Klass or Takki was in custody, awaiting trial, along with Tomboy and Hercules. Some accounts say that on October 20th our nation's hero was executed, followed the day after by Tomboy and the day after by Hercules. The three of them were broken at the wheel, a slow and painful death compared to crucifixion.
Can we each pledge to call his name tomorrow, and then his and Tomboy's name the day after and then all three names on the 22nd? It can be as simple as turning to someone at 12 noon, or while you are having coffee or when you bump into them at First Choice and say don't forget King Court/Prince Klass. Or maybe stop for a minute and tell someone (especially someone younger) just a little about him. Don't let the 20th October pass without you saying his name at least once. FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS. PLEASE SHARE IT! (contributed by Barbara Arrindell)

A Walk Down Carnival Memory Lane...

In 2007, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda proudly participated in the Carnival Opening with "Skelli Hoppers and Long Ghosts," a tribute to the iconic 1959 Carnival band created by the late Marcus Christopher.
Our goal was simple—to help keep the traditions of our Carnival alive and introduce a new generation to the colourful characters that once captivated our streets. One of the greatest joys was seeing the excitement and wonder on the faces of children as they encountered the Skelli Hoppers. Their fascination reminded us why preserving our cultural heritage is so important.
A heartfelt thank you to the amazing troopers who helped bring this portrayal to life:
If you participated We'd love to recognize you.
