Squamish Rotary Celebrates Sixty Years of Service
The Rotary Club of Squamish recently celebrated sixty years of community and international service.
Present and former members and guests gathered at the Adventure Centre on September 19th to reminisce over the many friendships and contributions the club has provided since it was chartered by Rotary International in September1966.
Attendees included Don Patrick and Owen Carney who between them have over 113 years of service with the club. Our special guest Norma Kindree (photo), honorary Rotarian and wife of charter member Dr Laverne Kindree, was recognized for her support to the club.
The evening was highlighted with a video featuring past presidents, followed by MC Lino Vanzella recalling many events and stories of the club during its history.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 2016-2026
We started off this decade by celebrating our 50th anniversary. Many present and past Rotarians, and guests gathered at the Squamish Golf & Country Club for an evening of friendship, laughter and reminiscing.
The series of “Duck-in-a-Truck” fundraisers provided the ability to fund projects both in our community and overseas:
• Support for several local organisations and events, including:
The Youth Hub.
Under One Roof.
Pumpkin Patch in the Park.
Rivers Day.
The playground at Sp'akw'us Feather Park.
• The Hosanna Children’s Home in Kenya.
• The El Cardonal Children’s Home in Mexico.
• The Centre of Hope in Manila Philippines.
When the COVID pandemic hit, club members responded by:
- Funding a Glydoscope for the hospital to help incubate COVID patients
- Delivering Food Bank hampers when residents couldn’t attend in person.
- Placing inspirational “Rotary Hearts” on the Squamish trails.
- Designing, producing and selling Rotary puzzles when many were confined indoors.
We walked on the "Coldest Night of the Year" in support of Squamish Helping Hands and those less fortunate in our community.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 2006-16
The club continued to flourish with many highlights:
- Not 2, not 3, but 5 of 10 Presidents were women,
- 2 fundraisers raised in excess of $150,000.
- the club received 2 District Club of the Year awards.
- Projects included a kicking wall, a pavilion, support for people in Kenya, Mexico, Honduras.
- Campaign started to support a local hospice facility.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 1996-2006
As the Nineties came to a close and we rolled into the new Millennium, there were a few things that marked the transition:
• Correspondence started to be done by email rather than typed, copied, and posted.
• Financial reports were done using a spreadsheet program instead of hand-written ledgers.
• We welcomed our 1st woman President (and the 2nd).
And the club raised the bar with new events and projects;
• New trails in the District.
• New community buildings and amenities.
• Overseas projects in Kenya.
• Began the association with the Casa Colibri Medical Centre in Guatemala.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 1986-96
A few events that happened during the club's 3rd decade:
• 1985: Rotary launches PolioPlus to support Rotary’s commitment to a polio-free world.
• 1987: The Squamish PolioPlus Radiothon raises over $18,000.
• 1987: Women join Rotary clubs throughout the U.S. following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1989, women join clubs worldwide.
• 1989: Funds were raised to provide an ambulance to an Indian village but seemed to disappear.
• 1992: The club provides funding for the handicap pool at Brennan Park.
• 1994: The club provides funding for the Skateboard Park at Brennan Park.
• 1994: Participates in a reforestation project in the Philippines.
• 1996: Membership is now 53 active members.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 1976-86
The second decade saw the club continue to prosper introducing new events and fundraisers, and continue with established ones:
• The Sportsman’s Dinners recognised a leading active sportsman and several “builders”. Funds raised went into support for the community.
• The annual curling bonspiel for district clubs was held at the Squamish Curling Club from 1975 to 1988.
• The Bike Safety Rodeo and the Rotary Beef BBQ were always highlights in the community calendar.
• Club membership grew to about 48 members.

The Rotary Club of Squamish 1966-76.
The Rotary Club of Squamish was chartered on September 12th 1966, with 22 local businessmen making up the founding membership and Bob Bishop elected as the Charter President.
With Laverne Kindree as a charter member and President in 1967-68, the club raised funds for equipment and furnishings at Squamish hospital.
Bob Bishop was instrumental in the club’s first international project - a goat farm on a remote part of the Island of Cebu to provide fresh milk for the villagers.
The first decade also saw the start of community events that are still traditions today – the Rotary Beef BBQ at the Loggers Sports Festival, and the annual Rotary-RCMP Bike Safety Rodeo at the elementary schools. The latter teaching thousands of children the elements of cycling skills, helmet safety, and rules of the road.

This September, the Rotary Club of Squamish will be celebrating 60 years of service in our community and abroad, 60 years of friendship, and 60 years of promoting goodwill and peace.

For 60 years the Rotary Beef BBQ has been a highlight of the Loggers Sports Festival. The beef sandwiches, slow cooked on a rotisserie over an open alder fire, and served with onions on a brioche bun, are an annual tradition.
This year, we had a challenge due to the fire and campfire ban - we couldn’t use the open fire and had to pivot to find a different way to keep the tradition alive.
Thanks to the amazing support from the Squamish community, we were able to cook the beef offsite, prepare it as usual, and still serve up the mouth-watering sandwich for all to savour.
We thank all the volunteers who chipped in to help with special appreciation to:
- Mihaela and Bruce from Lil Chef Bistro
- Julian from Easter Seals
- Rosanne Scarth at The Watershed Grill
Who assisted us in the new process and let us use their expertise, equipment, and facilities.

The Squamish Pride Parade is held on the 1st Sunday in June. Pride Squamish sees a future in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) where all who live in our community can grow up and feel safe, healthy and proud of who they are.
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.
