For 60 years the Rotary Beef BBQ has been a highlight of the Loggers Sports Festival. The beef sandwiches, slow cooked on a rotisserie over an open alder fire, and served with onions on a brioche bun, are an annual tradition.
This year, we had a challenge due to the fire and campfire ban - we couldn’t use the open fire and had to pivot to find a different way to keep the tradition alive.
Thanks to the amazing support from the Squamish community, we were able to cook the beef offsite, prepare it as usual, and still serve up the mouth-watering sandwich for all to savour.
We thank all the volunteers who chipped in to help with special appreciation to:

- Rosanne Scarth at The Watershed Grill
Who assisted us in the new process and let us use their expertise, equipment, and facilities.

The Squamish Pride Parade is held on the 1st Sunday in June. Pride Squamish sees a future in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) where all who live in our community can grow up and feel safe, healthy and proud of who they are.
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

May 24th saw the Rotary Club of Squamish support Re:Bike in their annual bike drive. This is the day when unwanted bikes can be brought in to be refurbished and re-homed in the community.
During the day 75 bikes were donated and 45 bikes were refurbished and ridden away by new owners!

For the past 50 years, the Rotary Club of Squamish, with support from the local RCMP, has been putting on the Bike Safety Rodeo at the local elementary schools. On May 11-15 we were at the schools again and this year we had amazing support provided by Re:Bike, the new non-profit that services old bikes to give back into the community; see www.rebike.org. Their participation ensures that every kid can ride on Bike Rodeo day, whether they own a bike or not.
Also thank you to Tim Hortons for providing the volunteers with coffee and cookies. 😍
This year's rodeos were held at Brackendale, Garibaldi Highlands, St’a7mes, and Mamquam schools. Hundreds of schoolkids participated.
The kids bring their bikes to school and class by class, they have their bikes and helmets checked. If necessary they are repaired or adjusted by the Re:Bike volunteers. Then they are challenged to a number of skill tests under the direction and watchful eyes of the RCMP officers and Rotarians - ride a straight line, navigate a slalom course, do a figure eight, and safely cross at an intersection.

LYNDA ROCHA 1965-2026
- a Rotary Tribute
A dedicated leader, community pillar, friend, and proud member of the Rotary Club of Squamish, Lynda Rocha lived a life that truly exemplified the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."

Lynda was a committed member of Rotary from the age of 26 when in 1991, she joined the Kitimat club as one of the first female Rotarians. She served as Kitimat Club President and as Secretary 4 times during her years there, before joining Squamish Rotary in 2016. She immediately established herself as a valued contributor to her new club, and served in nearly all key roles, including President (2022-23) and as Secretary (2023 to present). But Lynda didn’t need a formal position to get involved. She willingly took on many other responsibilities - it seemed that whenever there was a job to do, Lynda would be there.

On May 8, 2026 the Rotary Club of Squamish sponsored its first “Adventures in First Responding” event at Howe Sound Senior Secondary School. This event brought together members of Squamish EHS (ambulance paramedics), Squamish RCMP and the Vancouver Police Department in what was effectively a careers day for high school students interested in careers in one or both of those services.

16 HSSS students, from grades 10 through 12 attended this day-long event.

The day’s program began with the students being put through a fitness testing session similar to that prospective police officers must pass when applying for careers in policing. This was followed by a classroom session during which Rotarians described the Adventures initiative, and members of both paramedic and police services addressed the students with general career information.

The students were then split into two groups for a two-hour morning session. One group attended and participated in paramedic instruction and simulations. This included such activities as CPR, giving injections, patient ventilation, wound treatment and blood staunching, the use of mechanical gurneys and a full tour of an attending ambulance. The other group attended and participated in police instruction and simulations, including some lecture time, simulated roadside stops using real (stationary) police cruisers, suspect approach and apprehension, and handcuffing. After a lunch break, the two groups switched and attended the opposite program to the one they’d attended in their morning sessions.

During the day, several members of the Squamish Fire Department dropped by to observe the day’s events. The firefighters held an impromptu question and answer session during the students’ lunch break. The hope is that the fire department will be full participants in future years’ Adventures programs.

At the end of the day Officer Graeme Minty of the VPD Canine Division put on an exciting police dog demonstration with his service dog “Sully”.

This day was a great success. It was the brainchild of long time Rotarian Lynda Rocha, this year’s Club Secretary. Tragically, Lynda died suddenly and unexpectedly just a few days before the event was held. Thanks to the dedication of all, the event nevertheless proceeded in her honour.

The hope is that Adventures in First Responding will become an annual event at HSSS in the years to come.
