Had a great meeting of the Chief Cexepe'enthlEm Park Project Task Force tthis afternoon. Following it, I received this missive from Lytton First Nation Elder (and park champion) Patrick Michell. Can anyone help?

"Hi everyone, I received this photo from an LFN member with a story he shared that this large rock, located just below the Parish Hall, was known as the Heart of the Nation.

"I had not heard the story before but this could make a great photo and conversation starter at the Park which may trigger more stories."

We are deeply saddened by the death of John Horgan, who dedicated so much of his life to public service as an MLA and premier. He was a friend of the New Pathways to Gold Society and an early member of the Friends of the 1926 Alexandra Bridge Project. On September 20, 2022, the Spuzzum First Nation was happy to host then-Premier Horgan in their traditional territory as part of his National Truth and Reconciliation Day tour of the province. After viewing the restoration work done to date, he hung a couple of commemorative hearts on the bridge and its approaches. Then he spent a great deal of time talking to the folks – more than his handlers with nervous eyes on the schedule likely were happy with. But John had a gift for engaging with people in a no-nonsense, down to earth way. We will miss him greatly.

This marvelous picture of the original Alexandra Bridge was sent to us by Ashcroft-Cache Creek Journal Editor Barbara Roden. It shows the bridge and toll house sometime between 1884 when the CPR was completed on the west side (left) and the big Fraser River flood of 1894. The 1926 highway bridge was built on the foundations of this Cariboo Waggon Road bridge built in 1863. It was lovingly restored by Eric Brighton.
