Remembering The Toughest Canoeist Of All Time: Verlen Kruger canoed the full length of the Mississippi River several times over his 82 years. For most people, just one trip would provide bragging rights to last a lifetime. Kruger wasn’t most people.

It’s not just that boasting wasn’t part of his repertoire, it’s that he logged an insane amount of miles in his canoe. With expeditions crisscrossing the entire Western Hemisphere, Kruger paddled more than 100,000 miles. That’s more than 42 runs of the Mississippi River, or four trips around the equator. Take your pick.

Born in 1922, Kruger grew into a charismatic and confident man. His friends would recall how he seemed fearless, excepting of course, his phobias of bears and armadillos, which he’d only cop to when talking in his sleep. At 41 years old, he started canoeing. He spent the next 41 years making up for lost time.

Driven by an obsessive devotion to his new sport, he redefined expedition canoeing. Measured by mileage or by ambition, his adventures were nothing short of colossal.

Buried beneath layers of sediment for nearly a thousand years, a remarkable 28-foot canoe has re-emerged from history. Experts believe it was crafted by Indigenous peoples — possibly the ancestors of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe — and its impressive size hints at how it was once used. Such a long vessel was likely designed for extended travel, fishing expeditions, or transporting supplies along the region’s interconnected rivers and lakes. When archaeologists finally brought it to the surface, they were astonished by its condition: the carved contours, the length, and even its structural outline had survived the passage of centuries.

Its preservation is nothing short of extraordinary. Wood rarely lasts underwater, yet the unique chemical composition of Lake Waccamaw created an environment that shielded the canoe from decay. Because of this natural protection, researchers today can closely examine the craftsmanship and engineering techniques used by early Indigenous builders. It provides a rare and valuable glimpse into the technological skills, cultural practices, and daily life of pre-colonial America.

But this canoe is more than an archaeological discovery—it is a powerful link between generations. Found in the summer of 2021 by three teenagers who initially assumed it was just an old log, it now stands as a symbol of the resilience, ingenuity, and legacy of Native American communities. Every curve and groove carved into its wooden body whispers stories of ancient journeys, reminding us of a time when waterways were the highways of civilization, guiding trade, travel, and community life.
