This is what systemic failure looks like.
The fire at the former Tim Hortons on Water Street is not a surprise. Us paying attention downtown saw this coming.
I've worked with the houseless for well over a decade, including in Hamilton, where I watched a city absorb the consequences of every community that decided homelessness, addiction, and mental health were someone else's problem.
Hamilton is beyond capacity.
So is London.
Communities like Simcoe have long had the privilege of sending these problems down the highway.
That option is gone.
What remains is a population of people without adequate care, in a county that has some of the highest rates of youth addiction in Ontario and no safe consumption services, no comprehensive localized support infrastructure, and intervention that arrives too late (if at all).
A private corporation owns that building. Norfolk County's bylaw department is apparently in conversation with them about "compliance."
In the meantime, a building burned.
The solution is not to blame the people living there. That's easy and it's shortsighted.
The solution is the hard, unglamorous, expensive work of building the infrastructure these people need (harm reduction, youth intervention, housing, wraparound support) and accepting that there is no version of this that is quick or easy or cheap.
Simcoe Strong is committed to being part of that conversation in a serious way. We are asking our elected officials, at every level, to do the same.
The complexity of this problem is not an excuse for inaction.
It is a reason to start now.
