Longtime Rotarian, Charlie Teeuwsen, kicked off our meeting with a dose of JOY in the invocation - because happiness is cool, but JOY is like the cool cousin who shows up unannounced & makes everything better. We need to bottle that JOY and label it 'thanks for existing'!

Our guest speaker, Dr. Walter Kowalchyk, PhD, or Dr. Walt, regaled us with tales of growing up in Sherwood Park and his epic career as an educator. After his second retirement, he became a certified Home Inspector & now teaches others in the industry, because someone's gotta keep them honest. Dr. Walt has volunteered a gazillion hours to various groups & stumbled upon Rotary, so he's joining us soon - we're thrilled to have him on board!!

Ihor Kruk’s invocation at last Friday’s meeting reminded us as Rotarians we need to donate to the RI Foundation to support the great projects happening in the world.

Ronda Gras, “Queen of Asphalt” was our Guest Speaker & is a Research Chemist at DOW Chemical. She was excited to explain how her & her team’s work in measurement technology with asphalt has led to greater sustainability. DOW has invested greatly in a new facility, which has her team recycling farm waste into the asphalt. This means less than 5% waste going into our land fills. Ronda captivated our interests & taught us all a little bit about the difference in the types of asphalt we use throughout Canada.

We had an amazing breakfast meeting today, which was well attended. Paul Humphrey gave the invocation & shone the spotlight on our Club Members who went above & beyond to make our 2026 Annual Golf Charity Tournament a success last Monday…despite the downpour of rain!!

Sarah Olaleye, recipient of our $1k scholarship came by to say thank you. Best of luck studying engineering at the U of Toronto in the fall Sarah!!

Finally, our Guest Speaker was Dr. Peter Brindley, MD currently working in the ICU at the U of Alberta Hospital. He spoke about the most important factor in medicine is “communication”. How that applies to any profession, career, club, sports team & so on. He emphasized that how we interpret & act on what we see, hear & feel determines the outcome of important situations. Clear communication is what makes it all work. Dr, Brindley was an excellent speaker & we hope he returns to teach us all again!!

At yesterday’s Breakfast Meeting, Rod Kurylo gave the invocation about volunteerism. He noted that it is the best way to build relationships & improve communities to simply make things better. Service Above Self is a choice & a way of life!

Pam Patterson, PCRST / Radiation Therapist, was our Guest Speaker. She spoke on her radiation therapy team & program for palliative care available at the Cross Cancer Institute. The results they are seeing with their clients is remarkable, in that their lives are extended, often a reduction in pain & they have a better outlook on what is ahead.

We are grateful for Pam in leading this team & we thank her for showing us this amazing advance in palliative patient care.

At this morning’s meeting we had Dr. David Atkinson provide the invocation. He in his own way described that sympathy or empathy is not the same as compassion. Compassion means to act when someone is in need. Rotarians live by compassion as “Service Above Self”. David emphasized we all need compassion in supporting the Strathcona Food Bank!!

Gary Harripersad was indicted today as our newest Club Member. Al Petersen pinned Gary with the Club’s membership pin.

Mike Houle provided his Classification speech today on being a System Engineer & what led him to Rotary. Mike is a new member & has jumped in to the action with both feet!!
