Our April parenting session created a meaningful space for Black immigrant parents, caregivers, and guardians to share lived experiences, reflect on the realities of raising children in a new country, and exchange practical strategies for navigating parenting in Canada.

The conversations were honest, relatable, and empowering, reminding us that parenting across cultures comes with both challenges and growth. From supporting children’s development to building positive and nurturing home environments, the shared wisdom in the room was truly impactful.

Parenting comes with many questions, but no one should have to navigate the journey alone. 🖤

A sincere thank you to our funder for supporting initiatives like this and helping create spaces where Black immigrant families can connect, learn, and thrive together.

📸 Highlights from our March event!

This session created a welcoming space for asking questions, sharing experiences, and receiving guidance as Black newcomer parents and caregivers navigate life in Canada.

A special shoutout to our amazing chefs who prepared delicious dishes from Congo, Kenya, and Nigeria; thank you for sharing a taste of home! 🙌

And of course, thank you to all our participants who joined us and sought clarity in their tax filing. Your engagement makes these events meaningful! 🖤

This event was made possible with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

On February 7, 2026, we hosted our monthly Kitchen Table Series Talk, focusing on tax in Canada. Designed specifically for Black newcomer parents, caregivers, and guardians, knowing that many in our community will be filing their taxes in Canada for the very first time.

We talked about:
✔Why filing taxes is important
✔What documents are needed
✔Benefits and credits families may qualify for
✔Where to access trusted, free community tax clinics

A big thank you to the Sault Community Career Centre, our organizational mentor, for graciously hosting us and creating such a welcoming space for our session.

And a special appreciation to Yssra Abakar for generously sharing her knowledge and time with our community.

We are also deeply grateful to our funder, the Ontario Trillium Foundation , whose support makes initiatives like the Kitchen Table Series possible.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honour not only the legacy of those who came before us, but also the resilience and strength of Black newcomer parents and guardians building new futures here in Canada🖤

We remain committed to creating spaces for learning, empowerment, and community.

Black History Month is an opportunity to name and honour the histories, contributions, and realities of Black people, while affirming that Black history and Black lives are not limited to one month. Our stories, knowledge, and resistance are ongoing and deeply rooted in our everyday experiences.

At ACCANO PCGs, our programs are designed by and for Black parents, guardians and caregivers, grounded in lived experience, cultural knowledge, and community care. We recognize the systemic barriers Black families face, particularly within education, healthcare, child welfare, and settlement systems, and we work collectively to support, advocate, and build capacity within our community.

As we mark Black History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to centring Black voices, strengthening Black families, and advancing community-led solutions that do not pause at the end of February but continue every day of the year🖤✊🏾🖤✊🏾.

Last Saturday, ACCANO PCGs’ YOF Program held its first meeting of the year, and we were excited to welcome a full house of newcomer Black parents and guardians in Sault Ste. Marie. The warmth, laughter, and connection in the room reminded us of the strength of community.

We are grateful to Jessie Kahtava for facilitating an engaging session focused on sourdough making and food security. Participants were excited to learn the process and each received a sourdough starter to take home and recreate the recipe for themselves and their loved ones.

Food was at the heart of our gathering. We shared a delicious Kenyan meal, with a special shout-out to our Kenyan ladies who generously shared their cultural dishes and treated us to an unforgettable experience 🇰🇪✨.

Thank you to all our participants for showing up, learning, sharing, and building community with us. And a heartfelt thank you to the for their ongoing and generous support. Your commitment helps us create culturally grounded, empowering spaces for Black parents and guardians in Sault Ste. Marie.

We’re looking forward to an amazing year ahead!

Our FFBC Program Finale was a beautiful celebration of women’s growth, resilience, and achievements. From heartfelt testimonials to moments of reflection, laughter, and connection, this gathering reminded us of the strength that lives in community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our funders and the .heritage for supporting this program for Black women in Sault Ste. Marie. 🖤✨ Your commitment made it possible to create a space rooted in empowerment, learning, and collective care.

Over the past eight months, women showed up consistently, building confidence, strengthening skills, and forming meaningful connections. The testimonials shared speak volumes: stories of renewed self-belief, clarity of purpose, personal growth, and the power of being seen and supported in community.

As you watch these highlights, we hope you feel the joy, courage, and transformation that defined this journey. While the program is getting to an end, the impact, relationships, and confidence built will continue forward.

This was more than a series of sessions; it was a journey that affirmed the resilience of Black women and showed what is possible when intentional investment meets lived experience. Thank you for believing in this work and in the Black women of Sault Ste. Marie.
