Spring doesn’t just bring warmer weather. It brings predictable increases in toxic exposures.🌷

From lilies and chocolate to xylitol, rodenticides, and cleaning products, seasonal risks shift quickly this time of year. The challenge? Many clients don’t recognize the danger until symptoms appear and by then, time matters.

In this Trends article, developed with Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT (Pet Poison Helpline), you’ll find:

🌿 Common spring toxins
👀 Clinical signs to watch for
🩺 Triage and team communication considerations
🗣️ Practical client education strategies

It also includes a printable client handout 📄 you can use in exam rooms or at discharge to reinforce prevention and early intervention.

Because when it comes to toxic exposures, early recognition — even before symptoms — can make all the difference.

RVTTC is proud to appoint committee representatives who advocate for Registered Veterinary Technologists & Technicians across Canada! 🍁

By having RVTTC representation on national committees and across regions, we ensure our members have a strong voice on the issues impacting the RVT profession both nationally and internationally. These representatives generously volunteer their time and expertise to advance our profession.

From March 25–30, many of our advocacy representatives were in Ottawa attending the CVMA Committee Weekend, where important work was accomplished:

• Advocacy meetings were held on Parliament Hill with key politicians

• Committee chairs shared annual highlights during the Committee Reporting Dinner
• Committees worked through full agendas, including:
– Position Statements
– Accreditation Standards
– Continuing Education planning
– NEB and workforce readiness initiatives
– Animal Welfare topics
– WIDEA initiatives and member supports
• A Volunteer Appreciation Banquet celebrated contributions of dedicated members
• A Strategic Planning Session brought together Council, staff, and Committee Chairs
• The AHTVT Program Accreditation Committee held in-depth weekend meetings

👏 RVTTC Representatives in attendance:
• Susan Thiessen – AHTVTPAC (Western Representative)
• Heather Quilty – AHTVTPAC (Eastern Representative & first-ever RVT Co-Chair)
• Lisa Langton – Professional Development Committee (East)
• Carolyn Cartwright – Professional Development Committee (West)
• Kate Cooper – Animal Welfare Committee (first and only RVT member)
• Lois Ridgway – RVTTC CVMA Council Liaison; Liaison to National Issues Committee & AHTVTPAC

Veterinary technician utilization has measurable impacts on patient care, team wellbeing, and practice sustainability. 🐾

The 2023 AAHA Technician Utilization Guidelines highlight what happens when credentialed veterinary technicians (CrVTs) are fully utilized within their state-defined scope of practice:

✅ ~$104K–$137K estimated revenue impact per CrVT, per veterinarian
✅ 36% median revenue increase when appropriate tasks are delegated
✅ By 2030, a projected shortage of 50,000+ CrVTs

CrVTs complete accredited education programs, pass the VTNE, and maintain continuing education all to support high-quality patient care as part of the veterinary team.

As conversations about access to care continue, these data points offer an important perspective: strengthening and supporting the roles already established within the veterinary team is a critical part of the path forward.
