Monument Cleaning
Step 1: Prepare the area
Remove any loose debris like leaves, branches, or grass from around and on the monument.
Wet the entire headstone surface thoroughly with a hose or a bucket of clean water to loosen dirt and vegetation.
Step 2: Wash the monument
Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water to create a cleaning solution. Avoid using acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice.
Apply the solution to the monument using a soft cloth or sponge.
Gently scrub the surface in a circular motion with a soft-bristled brush (nylon or a toothbrush for details). Do not use metal or plastic bristle brushes.
For areas with heavy mineral deposits, a pumice stone (like a grill brick, but be sure it's a soft, non-abrasive type) can be used carefully on polished surfaces, but avoid using it on marble, bronze, or non-polished areas.
Step 3: Rinse and dry
Thoroughly rinse all soap residue from the monument with clean water.
Dry the monument completely with a soft cloth. Buff polished areas to restore shine.
Important considerations
Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use bleach, ammonia, or other acidic cleaners, as they can damage the granite.
Use soft tools: Never use metal brushes, wire brushes, or power washers, as they can scratch or damage the stone.
Work on a cool stone: It is best to clean monuments in the early morning or late afternoon when the stone is cool.
Stop if damaged: If you see flakes or cracks during cleaning, stop immediately and contact a professional monument company.
For severe staining: If the monument is badly stained or neglected, hiring a professional monument cleaning service is the best way to ensure it is cleaned properly without causing damage.
